Drains on Humanity Part II: Thomas Grant Campbell

Grant Campbell joined the Marine Corps at the age of 20 in 2006. Officially called Thomas Grant Campbell II (his family seemingly didn't know this was an incorrect form of naming and he should have been dubbed a Junior), he was called Grant. We're told those who make high enough on the admission exams may enter the Marines as a corporal, possibly making sergeant within three more years. For whatever reason, Grant was still a corporal when he left the service five years later...or more accurately was thrown out after his court martial on theft charges.

Grant served two tours in combat zones and saw action. None of this was anything he volunteered for, and when he returned from his second tour in the Middle East, he contacted medical personnel about his mental problems which included depression. Physicians diagnosed the young Marine with both depression and PTSD.

Here, we're leaving documented evidence and entering into the world of educated guess. Physicians know if it walks and talks like a duck, it's probably a duck. We're sure Marine doctors treated more than their share of military personnel with PTSD. Therefore, we're speculating they might not have considered a diagnosis of schizophrenia, quite common in individuals in their mid 20s who suddenly begin to have irrational thoughts. Think "Tony Smith" in Part I of this series. Was this Grant's real problem? It would seem likely from his later behavior, and simply having schizophrenia doesn't rule out the possibility of also having PTSD.

Back to documented evidence... Grant was now stationed at Camp Lejuene in North Carolina, a huge facility used for joint maritime training, meaning it housed thousands of items of modern tactical gear. It may have been impossible to keep track of all the expensive military equipment present at the camp, but in 2011 the NCIS was called in to help stem a rash of thefts of high-dollar military tactical gear.

Grant's name came up early in the investigation and agents tailored a sting operation set to capture the Marine gone bad. In short order, Grant made at least two sales to an undercover agent, from which he netted $1,400.00. Grant was arrested and court martialed. His attorney asked for leniency, but a Marine court stated Grant Campbell deserved none. Even though he had asked for a simple discharge, Grant was given a dishonorable heave-ho, the equivalent of a civilian felony conviction.

Grant returned home to Colbert County in 2011 and lived there until his death in 2013. His only jobs were at businesses owned by his family, and he often worked in some sort of restaurant support job. Several co-workers who had known Grant before he left for the Marines were disturbed by the change in the young man who now became easily upset and made inappropriate comments to women who frequented the Campbell businesses.

Grant racked up some minor arrests and one not so minor; he was awaiting trial on a meth possession charge in Madison County at the time of his death in November 2013. Still on psych meds, Campbell abused alcohol and was well over the legal limit on the night of his death. His obituary enumerated his medals and other military awards, but all were of the participation variety with the exception of a sharp-shooter badge earned via talent, not good or exceptional behavior.

We have no doubt that both the military and family failed Thomas Grant Campbell. We also have no doubt that at the time of his death, Grant was a drain on humanity and was about to take that which he could never give back.

We'll be publishing a blog on Grant Campbell's death at a later date using information taken from the Chris Martin trial transcript to which we've just now obtained access.

    1. If you have found any misinformation, please point it out and we will happily report it. Perhaps you've forgotten Grant Campbell tried to kill an innocent woman the night he was shot dead? Shall we just forget it and say "Oh, well..."

    3. HOLd up avenger. Theres proof to back each statement made so if your worried about a dead marine that ruined lives with misconduct and DISGUSTING behavior ,if your an upstanding respectful citizen anyways, rather than the law and it equally prtecring everyone YOU take a look in the mirror and realize if you had to protect yourself against the Large crazy marine with a knife and history of crime ask yourself HOW WOULD YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND IF YOU HAD TO HURT SOMEONE wouldnt you want THE LAWS TO PROTECT YOU AND YOUR RIGHTS and you life your liberty your property. LETS NOT FORGET GRANT WAS DRUNK .26 BAC AT CHRIS MARTINS HOUSE AS A GUEST. Proper etiquette would be not to get WASTED TO THE POINT YOU BRING HARM TO YOUR OWN LIFE BY BEING BELIGERANTLY DRUG UUHMMM COMATOSE LEVELS AND METH. YES I BELIEVE CHRIS MARTIN WAS IN DANGER little avenger ;)

    4. Theavenger did 20years fit chris martin alright for you? I bet. Remember alabama 13A-23-13 if youd care to educate yourself on the law and what it says. This is a castle doctrine it is the stand your ground law and it doesnt state how bad situations can turn in split seconds but it allows protection to those who who DO need to protect themselves. STAND YOUR GROUND. CHRIS MARTIN WAS ACTING UNDER HIS LEGAL RIGHT AND IN A COURT OF LAW HE WAS UNJUSTLY TRIED AND SENTENCED.
PS. OPINIONS LIKE YOURS IS WHY THE JUDGE AND DA CHOOSE COMMUNITY OVER LAW COMMUNITY OVER OATH OF OFFICE COMMUNITY OVER CHRIS MARTINS RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW

    5. A HIT JOB ON A DEAD MARINE . Pleasently put. Talk about NERVE. Drain on decency? Are you kidding. This isnt some personal attack as some obviously feel. This is about chris martin has been wrongly prosecuted and how it appears crutial evidence leading up to grants death wasnt heard at trial. A new venue was requested for fairness because the two men were very close friends. Tim case said it wasnt nessacary. THEN the same lawyer leaves the court house throwing his hands in the air and stated outloud that "this court was too POLITICAL" EVIDENCE JUST DISSAPEARS AFTER THE HOSPITAL, AND FORENSICS COULDNT OROVIDE AN ACCURANT REPORT DUE TO TOO MUCH TAMPERING. 4 WITNESSES . WITNESS MEANS TO HAVE an accurate account of what happens because your a spectator so why call them liars they all knew grant they were all sworn in..ect ..ect.. ect..#justiceforchrismartin

    6. In response to one comment, the woman whom Grant Campbell held hostage was, according to her family, not pregnant.

    7. Very sorry for that mistake, Shoalanda...Also I have learned since I commented that she broke loose, he did not let her go. There is a lot of info to sort through and I apologize that I got my facts wrong. Will be much more careful in the future. God bless.

    8. I must admit I was unaware of the circumstances of this case. And THAT is the problem with this post. Perhaps some background information that an attempted murder may have taken place would have been more informative. AS WRITTEN, this is simply a "hit job". This is the problem with these knee jerk post which present one side of a story with no supporting information, something this blog is well known for. It is obvious passions are high regarding this case and fittingly so. There are always 2 sides to a story, unfortunately they are frequently not explained or considered on this blog. To someone who is reading information about Mr. Campbell for the first time regarding this case like I was and was unaware of the situation, it comes across as inflammatory. THIS was the purpose of my post. Not to defend Mr. Campbell or condemn Mr. Murphy. If Mr Murphy was wrongly accused, it seems there would have been a better way to present the evidence than was used in this post.......and as is too often the case on this blog; factless HIT JOBS.

    9. We've been discussing the Grant Campbell shooting now for three weeks. Also, if you find any "factless" posts here on any subjects, please ask us to elaborate, and we'll do so.

  4. A hit job. A hit would implicate that James Martin intentionally meant to cause harm to Mr. Campbell. So you mean to say that Mr. Martin spent the whole day with Mr. Campbell eating, drinking, and watching football just to shoot him. Mr. Martin knew him well enough that he entered Mr. Martin's house while he was asleep and woke him up. Let's also keep in mind that another party that was there felt threatened enough by Mr. Campbell that he unclapsed the strap on his pistol holster. There were pictures before the incident of Mr. Campbell and one of the children smiling. Not trying to run Mr. Campbell's name thru the mud but we are trying to correct an injustice. The trial was unfair. Evidence was missing and reports tampered with. Mr. Theavenger if this was your loved one would you not want the same?

  5. I did not know Grant. I have known Chris for 25 years. He is still my best friend. He is a good person whose hand was forced in self defense by a mentally unstable person. Why he is unstable is inconsequential. It is obvious though that he was. Facts are being disclosed as to why. The fact remains though, Chris had no intentions to hurt anyone. Why would he? What was there to gain? Just the safety of himself and his loved ones. If you can name one person who would not protect theirself or their family by any means necessary I would say that person is a waste. I would of done exactly what Chris did to protect my loved ones. The difference is I would have used a .45, not a .22. It is the difference between having to use one ir two shots or six. I guarantee that if Chris knew how unstable Grant was, he would not have been invited to his house in the first place. #justiceforchrismartin

  6. Chris Martin's trial should have never been held in Colbert County. He asked Tim Case in the beginning if they should ask for a change of venue and Tim told him no. He assured Chris that due to the compelling circumstances everyone would clearly see that Chris only acted in self defense. We believed him and moved forward. We have taken legal measures yet Chris is still in prison mainly because Judge Hatcher's daughter-in-law has very close connections to the Campbell family. The Judge herself moves in the same social circle as Sherry Campbell. Plus Bryce Graham and the Campbells are very well associated. Where oh where is there any justice in that!
