Is Personal Morality Needed for Public Office?

We've seen some interesting comments over the years. Some concerned Bill Clinton whom many thought was a great prexy even though he regularly received blow jobs in the Oval Office. We wonder how they would feel if it had been the president of a large local corporation in which their retirement funds were invested? Oh, well, that's different. Really? How?

Read carefully: Our objections to some candidates don't come mainly from the lives they live, but from their endless profession of Christian faith. If they can ignore Matthew 19, how can we be sure they won't be putting some taxpayer dollars in their pockets? How is it any different? Please, someone, anyone, tell us.

One current candidate for sheriff in Lauderdale County has mentioned his "faith." Looking back, we haven't seen an explicit mention of just what this faith is in. Cthulhu maybe? It certainly can't be in Christ since this is what Christ Himself says in Matthew 19:9:

New International Version
I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."
New Living Translation
And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery--unless his wife has been unfaithful."
English Standard Version
And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
New American Standard Bible
"And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."
King James Bible
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Holman Christian Standard Bible
And I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."
International Standard Version
I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."
NET Bible
Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery."
Aramaic Bible in Plain English
But I say to you, “Whoever divorces his wife apart from adultery and will take another, commits adultery, and whoever will take her who is divorced commits adultery.”
GOD'S WORD® Translation
I can guarantee that whoever divorces his wife for any reason other than her unfaithfulness is committing adultery if he marries another woman."
Jubilee Bible 2000
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication and shall marry another, commits adultery, and whosoever marries her that is put away commits adultery.
King James 2000 Bible
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoever marries her who is put away does commit adultery.
American King James Version
And I say to you, Whoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoever marries her which is put away does commit adultery.
American Standard Version
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.
Douay-Rheims Bible
And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.
Darby Bible Translation
But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, not for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery; and he who marries one put away commits adultery.
English Revised Version
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.
Webster's Bible Translation
And I say to you, Whoever shall put away his wife, except for lewdness, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoever marrieth her who is put away, committeth adultery.
Weymouth New Testament
And I tell you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except her unfaithfulness, and marries another woman, commits adultery."
World English Bible
I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries her when she is divorced commits adultery."
Young's Literal Translation
'And I say to you, that, whoever may put away his wife, if not for whoredom, and may marry another, doth commit adultery; and he who did marry her that hath been put away, doth commit adultery.'

Hmmmm, didn't see anything about being "responsible" for a child's death, a drug addict, or an embezzler (no arrest). We're still missing one ex-wife for this particular candidate. At best, he certainly doesn't make good choices, does he? You want him in charge of hiring deputies? We think not.

  1. Yes. A Leader. Someone who LEADS.
    Follower: Someone who FOLLOWS.

Those two go hand in hand.

Remember the story "The Pied Piper"?
There is a clear moral to the story which is also a continuing theme throughout the play: ‘The Importance of Keeping Promises’. The consequence of breaking a promise is illustrated in the Pied Piper’s response to the townsfolk refusing to pay the agreed fee for freeing the town of its rat plague. He charms the children away in the same way that he charms the rats away from the town. This is both an ironic and serious consequence but still a lesson of telling the truth and not misleading others.

  2. Just for the sake of fairness...or argument...divorce is not the unpardonable sin, and even someone who has remarried several times can still be forgiven, and can still be a Christian. Once the sin is forgiven, it's forgiven, under the blood, we like to say.

Now...does God's forgiveness make such a person a good sheriff candidate? Not at all. Like you said, at best, he doesn't make good choices.

I know my idea of forgiveness in such a situation is not popular with certain denominations...I am not trying to convince anyone. I let the Bible interpret the Bible, and let them work out their own salvation.

On a side note: I still say Augie Hendershot is a perfect name for a southern sheriff. lolz

My vote, however, will go to Rick Singleton.

    1. My vote will also go to Rick Singleton. As for divorce, this does seem to be a matter of theology in various religious bodies disagreeing.

Out take? Would that also mean if you steal the cool million trust fund from the little old lady, can you be forgiven and still keep it? We await answers from our readers.

  3. I don't know how many times Hendershot has been married, I heard several times but it makes one wonder what he does while on duty at night. Possibly hunting wives? Singleton is my choice.
