Why Did Mitch Campbell Die?

We once heard of a man in Madison County who had the chance to purchase a beautiful home on a large lot in an unincorporated area. The man snapped up the bargain home and quickly moved in. It was only a matter of days before heat and humidity brought the smell of a local pig farm to this man's new prize. He immediately contacted the local health department. They laughed.

Yes, many things are legal in the county that aren't legal in the cities. That's why many choose to live in a rural setting. Firing a gun is one of these hobbies that's not illegal in the county...or Central Heights.

Why did Mitch Campbell die? So far we've heard only the family's side. There's always two sides to every story. We do know the neighbor with whom Campbell had words earlier Saturday called the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office. The deputies went in prepared for a gun/hostage situation. The family says they couldn't have been more wrong.

We understand that law enforcement in such a situation has only a split second to respond or possibly lose their lives. They responded with five, perhaps six, shots. The ABI investigation may take weeks. Even then, the report will never state what was going through Mitch Campbell's mind when he first saw the deputies. No such report can ever be complete. The neighbor who made the call has much to answer for.

Our sympathies to the Campbell family. You can read more on the shooting here:

Yesterday we blogged on Lowery Davis, the most recently announced candidate for Lauderdale County Sheriff. One of our readers has been very vocal in announcing the photo we ran was not of Mr. Davis, but of a Deputy Boone.

If this is the case, we would appreciate Mr. Davis forwarding us a photo, as well as Mr. Martin; however, here is a screen shot from the sheriff's office page that identifies this gentleman as Mr. Davis:

We still think Bo is cuter than any announced candidates.

A friend recently mentioned this old adage. We think it's worth repeating: You can choose your friends; you can't choose your family.

  1. "The neighbor who made the call has much to answer for." For what, calling the Sheriff's Department? It would seem that you're implying that it is the neighbors fault.

    1. If the neighbor reported the shots as a form of getting even for the earlier argument, then, yes, the neighbor has much to answer for.

  2. Bo has since passed away also...

    1. RIP, Bo. You looked like a real dog, and those are words of praise.

  3. I dunno if you chose that snap for a reason or not, but the other deputy is the one who shot Mitch Campbell. He was supposed to be taking a mental health day and didn't do it. I'm guessing his career in law enforcement is over.

    1. No, I chose the photograph since it had the caption above it listing Lowery Davis as the man with Bo.

Anyone out there know about this mental health day?

  4. I had heard Joe did the shooting too,... but in these situations you are likely to hear anything.

  5. South Bound you are wrong... the blonde deputy does not work in Lauderdale Co anymore and Joe may have been there but not the primary shooter. My point is why do people think the police want to kill people. Its not like they get a bonus for it. They suffer to. I'm sire not as much as the family with the loss of a loved one, but he will second guess his actions foe the rest of his life. He will see it and hear it all for ever. They do not want to kill people. I wish people would stop and think instead of being mean and making ignorant statements

  6. I may have sent twice... sorry

The blonde deputy is no longer in Lauderdale Co, and the other man was not the one accused of it as far as I know. He may have been there but South Bound you are incorrect .
Another thing is why do some people blame the police as if they are taught to kill and enjoy it. His life is ruined just as much as the family with the lost loved one. The deputy will second guess his actions until he dies. His family will suffer as well. Police DO NOT get extra money for taking a life. Please put your self in their shoes for a minute before making ignorant comments. We are all human, the badge they wear proudly only makes them more brave then us who are all on the side lines throwing in our two cents....

  7. I doubt that many people think law enforcement officers want to kill anyone. That was the point of my comment about the neighbor.

I could call Florence police right now and tell them my neighbor was shooting at passing cars. They wouldn't know my neighbor is a 90 year-old retired school teacher who probably doesn't own a gun.

  9. I am the boy's uncle. They snuck across a 1/8 mile field. Why did they not drive from the callers home, blue lights on and down mitch's 600 foot driveway blue lights on. I was first on scene and his wife said he was shot from out of the dark, he was on a lighted porch, she heard no announcement that they were cops, they just opened fire on a man with a cast from his ankle to hip without warning. His gun was empty. Who says killers can't have a badge...his uncle B.J. Bobo

  10. I WAS mitch's uncle. I was first on scene
And cops threatened myself and my 70 y/old father with fist clinched posturing to harm us and white foam in corners of mouth, huh? We had said nothing threatening, we were there, we saw things we heard things. Mitch was siting up in chair and report says he was laying on porch?huh? His wife told me and dad they shot from concealed positions, NO notice they were cops she said, she has told stuff I cain't tell about to ABI. they have no idea she saw things that she didn't tell local pigs for reasons of safety. Instead of using patrol cars with blue lights to go to mitch's they crept across a high weeded field 1/8 mile wide?huh? So many things I cain't speak of now, but later after they are paying for murder. I raised him like a father who is my oldest brother, changed his diaper, tickled and played in the floor with him.I still see him as a sweet baby, can yall picture mentally ? Furious does not come close to the things I toy with in my mind. But I am a law abiding American. Justice will come to pass... uncle beej
