World Class Pharmaceutical Center?/Publix a No Show?

Florence City Councilman Barry Morris has called a Chinese drug manufacturer's once proposed plans for the former Florence Golf and Country Club a "world class pharmaceutical center." Dr. Morris, since when does alternative medicine come under the definition of "world class pharmaceuticals?"

Grocery Store Wars: Wish we still had a Winn-Dixie in the Shoals? Apparently the Birmingham area is the closest you'll find one. Now the chain has been purchased by Bi-Lo, a popular chain with several stores just across the state line in Tennessee. Will they open one here?

We won't hold our breath, but if you're hoping for that promised Publix, local gossip has it that it won't be coming either. Construction has been halted on the Cox Creek Pky location, and city officials aren't forthcoming with any answers. Perhaps that would make another great place for a world class pharmaceutical center, huh, Dr. Morris?

  1. I've heard two different rumors why Publix isn't coming. If either are true it's sad.

  2. My guess is talk of another WalMart slapped some sense into them. I don't know how well Publix would do that close to the supercenter.

  3. My e-mail is running 50-50 as to Publix being on/off. Let's hope it's still on. We've had enough rain to hold up any construction not related to an ark.

  4. We need the Publix! I have bought more from Whole Foods and Publix in other areas than our family has spent in the last year at Walmart locally. Walmart, new or old, does not have the same high quality products or selection that many of us have yearned to have locally. This is a running joke among many who tour prospective newcomers to our area. How many times have I heard or said, "we have everything you could need here except for a good supermarket"

  5. "World Class Pharmaceuticals" could always mean third world...

What does this Publix mess mean for Booksamillion? I'm missing the full size store, Books a Hundred by Target isn't cutting it.

  6. @BRecluse,.. One is because of the proposed walmart store on Cloverdale Rd,... the other and this one makes more sense, is that the land on Cox Creek and Hough is leased, not owned. The owners won't sell and Publix backed out of investing on leased land. And I don't blame Publix. They would have a lot of dollars invested to chance a lease not being renewed.

  7. We've had a lot of questions about Publix, many we can't answer. We can say that more stores than Publix are involved in this new shopping center, so even if the mega grocery chain has pulled out, some construction would continue--perhaps just at a slower pace. If Publix has pulled out in Florence, will it still build in Muscle Shoals? We don't know that either. The economy is still sluggish, and even at Christmas parking lots on either side of the river are hardly full. It seems we must wait until someone decides to make an official statement. BTW, if Publix isn't coming, Bi-Lo would be good fit.

  8. Leased land/buildings? Did you wonder why the Dollar General Store on Woodward Avenue built a new building? After all, the old one was not that "old."

It seems the former building was leased, and at renewal time the current owner wanted a hefty raise in rent. We understand the new store is totally owned by DG, provides nice rest rooms, and more square footage. No word if the owner of the old building just a few blocks away has any takers...or even lookers.

  9. Alternative medicine (sic) is for the credulous when they're not trying to buy the O'Neal bridge. I think UNA is trying to rid itself of a lemon with that former country club and golf course.

  12. Another Wal-Mart would mean the loss of more locally owned business. PLEASE City of Florence, DO NOT approve the Wal-Mart project!
