PAWS v. HASRA?

What Would Alfie Do?

Yesterday we blogged on various “medical wars,” but there’s another local war raging and it isn’t pretty. PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) has legally challenged HASRA (Heart of Alabama Save Rescue Adopt) over the use of donated funds that were to be split in some manner between these two organizations. No matter who wins, the real losers are the animals who need the funding for shelter and rescue efforts.

For years we’ve given to out of state animal rescue efforts. Now we say let’s keep that money at home. It’s great to have rescue groups from New York and elsewhere travel to the Shoals to take dogs and other household pets back to an area where the breeding season is shorter, but these groups can’t do that in the first place without local contacts.

Should you support PAWS or should your money go to HASRA? Rest assured we already have an opinion, but we want to hear from our readers. Tell us what you think. We’ll publish the results in a few days.

  1. The New York rescue has dogs delivered to them by hasra.!! they do not come after them. Harsa and Paws was supposed to share that money BUT then hasra got greedy and wanted all the money.!! All hasra cares about is selling the dogs to the rescues up north. It is really sad because the animals are the ones losing from hasra's me me me attitude.

  2. What do you mean by the comment about breeding season?

    1. It means, believe it or not, in colder areas there can actually be a SHORTAGE of dogs for families to adopt. These groups select small to medium sized dogs to transport to the northern states and place them in homes, usually apartments. A Win-Win!

  3. oh, Deb, errr, i mean Transporter..... you have yourself all kinds of confused.

    Lets break your comment down:

"The New York rescue has dogs delivered to them by hasra.!! they do not come after them"

Yes, maam, HASRA sure does deliver them to the northern rescues, usually in a van that was part of a grant The PetCo Foundation awarded after HASRA applied for. HASRA is a 501c3 (not for profit) organization.

Who pays for the gas it takes to get there and back? I know of one trip that cost more than $800 in gas alone.... while we did ask for donations, ands we did get some, the balance was left to us to pay

"Harsa and Paws was supposed to share that money BUT then hasra got greedy and wanted all the money.!"

The agreed upon, by BOTH parties split was 25% PAWS and 75% HASRA. If you read the court documents, PAWS had in their possesion roughly $32,000, and HASRA $8000. It would be kind of hard for HASRA to try and keep ALL the money since PAWS had the majority of it....

"All hasra cares about is selling the dogs to the rescues up north"

Just to clue you in on the way rescues work.....
The rescues who agree to take the animals from the south know that having an animal "vetted" (spay/nueter, shots, wormer and health certificates) are MUCH cheaper here than up there. So, HASRA, and other rescues, pay all the costs associated with getting an animal to the destination upfront, and then the receiving party (northern rescues) reimburses HASRA back.

To clue you in, HASRA's attitude is, THEM, THEM, THEM....get THEM out of harms way, get THEM to safety, and get THEM into loving homes

    1. "To clue you in, HASRA's attitude is, THEM, THEM, THEM....get THEM out of harms way, get THEM to safety, and get THEM into loving homes" And THAT is what it is supposed to be about. I have NEVER understood the constant bashing and hateful stuff that goes on in the rescue world. When it becomes a ME thing that is when it becomes twisted - I applaud HASRA for all they do.

  4. and ps: Florence, Colbert, PAWS and HASRA all use the exact same rescues, repeat, *****THE SAME EXACT RESCUES***** so to imply that HASRA sells dogs would also imply that Florence, Colbert and PAWS do the same thing.

  5. THANK YOU Bruce for sharing that HUGE bit of information! After reading Sholanda's statement I do believe there is a self serving bitter war raging by certain individuals! IMO one that seems to be more personal and has little to do with the animals! It would be helpful for every one to have their facts straight before posting negative comments about either organization. It's obvious Sholanda is out to create chaos for HASRA! For myself.... I will continue to believe in both organizations and the work they do. Afterall.....it is ALL ABOUT THEM, THEM, THEM (all the animals in need)!

  6. There are so many animals in need, there is plenty for everyone to do! PAWS is the one group that has he most benefit community wide. From spay/neuter, trap neuter release for feral cats. They always help the shelters
