Let's Demand Action on Animal Abuse!

Readers have recently sent us information on three cases of animal abuse - all from Colbert County. No, we don't believe Colbert is the only bastion of perverts who feel better about themselves if they can kill a living being...or simply don't care if one dies. It seems Colbert is more rural and more prone to such crimes than more populated areas.

Wait, you say, wouldn't that imply Franklin County would have more such crimes? We have no doubt that county does, but very few simply care enough either to report them or to prosecute them.

One crime in Colbert County has not yet produced an arrest. We understand the results of a necropsy on the dog are not ready. The other two cases are much more direct.

Jonathan Paul Mullins argued with his mother in July. Not only did he assault her, in his rage, he killed a goat that belonged to her. Yes, he snapped the neck of a goat...just because he thought it might further hurt his mother and which we infer was also the object of his pent up rage.

This is the mark of a psychopath, and his mother is lucky her injuries were deemed to fall under the heading of only second degree assault. This wasn't Mullins first rodeo; he has previous charges both in Colbert County and Tennessee. Let's hope a Colbert County judge uses Mullins as an example.

Even more recently, we have Will Leeth. The PNS article, taken from a Colbert County animal control account, stated Leeth hit a dog in the head with a lead pipe. Readers were quick to send us screen shots from his Facebook page where he denied using a lead pipe; he says he hit the dog in the head with a part from heavy construction machinery. Well...we're certainly glad Mr. Loonytunes cleared that up for us. It may not have been made of lead, but we doubt the poor dog enjoyed being hit with it.

Leeth's battered girlfriend? Apparently all is forgiven. Whew! We were worried the woman might have had some common sense and sent Leeth packing. Let's hope animal control can now take the dog away permanently since the girlfriend has posted the resulting gash wasn't that much of a big deal. Why are we reminded of the rapist who said "she didn't resist much?"
