Colbert Hts. Fire Dept. Criticized

In 2016, Oak Grove Thatch volunteer fire fighter Bobby Wayne Crow (pictured) was arrested on a felony charge in Limestone County. Why? He had been convicted of second degree rape and was answering calls near an elementary school and day care. Fair or not?

Now a similar situation has arisen with the Colbert Heights fire and rescue. State representative Kerry Underwood wants to make it illegal for any convicted sex offender to volunteer as a first responder. He says sex offenders aren't needed.

Recently, the Colbert Heights department has come under fire for not having enough manpower. Should it lose one more?

Our opinion - yes.

And if you live in that area, volunteer. You may not be able to make every call, but you can do something.

Decline & Fall in Sheffield

These images all come from J. Redmon. We have more from Chaz as well to publish at a later date.

J. wants to know if an auto insurance company could legally sue the city. We want to know why grass can't be cut back and hydrants painted even if there's no money to repair the streets themselves.

Is J.D. Vance Mentally Stable?

One of These Two Would Make a Great Veep!

As we have mentioned, we will be voting for Trump/Vance. Besides expelling Palestinians from our country, Trump has now promised to make sure IVF remains legal in all 50 states. More on the latter in the next few days.

However, we worry what if? Is Sen. Vance presidential material should it come to that? Have you heard his latest criticism of women who have no children? His vulgar language?

If Harris unfairly criticized Trump at Arlington (many say she didn't), the correct response should be:

1. We don't think any intelligent person cares what the vice president says.

2. "She can go to Hell!"

We hope everyone picked number one. Unfortunately, Vance picked number two. Not good form.

Yet that wasn't Vance's only "odd" remark that came to light this week. While disagreeing with the head of the American Federation of Teachers three years ago, he criticized her for not having children. There may be plenty to criticize about the woman, but we never knew that a teacher had to have kids to be qualified to teach. Or even cats, for that matter.

The State of Alabama doesn't currently have enough STEM teachers. What if we fired all those who have no children? We can recall at least two fantastic teachers from our school days who had never been married and certainly had no children. Yet Vance thinks they were somehow inferior.

Why can't the U.S. produce any intelligent and sane candidates? This year's slate makes Hannibal Lecter look good.

Another Pothole Award for Sheffield

Go, Sheffield!!!

The City of Sheffield may never get an Inspiration Landing, but it has once again come in tops in potholes. A Florence resident recently ranked the four towns in reverse order:

Muscle Shoals
Florence
Tuscumbia and
Sheffield is last by a pot hole laden mile

We don't envy the next mayor of Sheffield and what he/she will have to face in correcting the mistakes of previous administrations.

One of our readers recently sent us this comment:

If it was good enough for our forefathers it should be good enough for the citizens of Florence - no alcohol sales tax revenue to the county until the citizens of Florence get to vote on the Superintendent of county schools.

We in Florence have Lynn Greer and Phillip Pettus (the first) to thank for losing that vote - just in case you've forgotten. Why do so many continue to vote for the absolute worst candidate on the ballot?

The Lockhard/Walters/Tahoe Solution

MUSCLE SHOALS, I have a solution to the ever growing mosquito population. Since the incompetent Mayor Lockhard can't manage running the little swamp and the City Clerk Ms. Walters runs the show (along with other things) we have a very simple solution.

The city mosquito fogger that sits idle most of the time needs to be installed on the new $60,000 white Tahoe Mr. Lockhard and the City Clowns bought for Ms. Walters. Note taken, the Ford Explorer that was for City Hall use was a bit smaller and couldn't carry all her family on their escapades, we have to acknowledge, it would not have been adequate for a mosquito fogger.

Therefore, we propose to the good City Government Clowns of Muscle Shoals to force Mr. Lockhard (tongue in cheek) to mount the mosquito fogger on top of the nice sturdy white Tahoe. Ms. Walters and her sidekick put a lot of miles on the white Tahoe running around town to her children's schools, personal errands, medical appointments, out to eat and other such things at the taxpayer's expense.

A mosquito fogger that automatically turns on when a vehicle is in motion would totally take care of the problem we have that originates from incompetent clowns in City Government. Another thing to consider, perhaps Florence, neighboring cities, Orange Beach, Atlanta, Montgomery, and all the other places they drive that white Tahoe to would help subsidize the gas since they will get free mosquito spraying as well.

Solution to the problem, courtesy of a sensible person in Muscle Shoals. Carry on.

Want to Join a City Board/Commission?

One of our regular readers suggested it would be helpful to let the public know about city board openings in order to avoid any future Henski nepotism situations. Hopefully this will let the public know how to participate.

1. There are 16 boards/commissions in Florence. Some are in conjunction with the county.

2. Board openings are posted online via the council meeting agendas.

3. Applications are also online or may be picked up at the municipal building.

4. You don't have to wait for an opening to apply if you have a special interest.

5. Pay? This is where it's tricky. The city website states there is no pay. That may be technically correct, but is there an incentive type reimbursement? We knew someone years ago who was paid $25.00/month. She lived near the municipal building, and meetings rarely lasted over 30 minutes. She felt more than compensated. From what we can ascertain, some boards "compensate" very well, up to $100.00 per meeting. Check with the mayor's office? How long do you have to sit and wait? Poor Andy has only three assistants. We assume any "salary" comes from the board's bank account and not the city payroll - hence the confusion.

6. Here are the 16 boards/commissions:

Florence-Lauderdale County Agri-Business Center & Farmers' Market Board
City/County Joint Board - 5 members (2 City appointed, 2 County appointed, 1 City/County appointed) - 3 year terms. Responsible for the setting of policies.  The purpose of this board is to manage, control, and operate the facilities (the Agri-Business Center) for the benefit of farmers and consumers in Lauderdale County and surrounding areas.

Beautification Board
12 members - 3 year terms. Established for the purpose of encouraging citizens and businesses to beautify their property. Joint sponsor of the annual Urban Forestry Conference with the Tree Commission. Annually judge business properties within the city limits, and recognizes top winners at an annual awards luncheon. Meet the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

Civil Service Board
5 members - 5 Year Terms. Scheduled meetings in addition to called meetings. Members receive $100.00 per month. The Civil Service Board was established by Act #437 of the Alabama Legislature in 1947. This board has authority over the Police and Fire Departments in hiring firing, promoting, and demoting. They screen applicants and give final approval for employment. Disciplinary action or termination may be appealed to the Civil Service Board. The Board is an advisory to the Mayor and City Council in matters concerning the Police and Fire Departments.

Florence Historic Preservation Commission
The Florence Historic Preservation Commission was created by the Florence City Council to establish a uniform procedure for use in providing for the protection, enhancement, perpetuation and use of places, districts, sites, buildings, structures, objects, landscape features and works of art having a special historical, cultural or aesthetic interest or value to the City of Florence.

Library Board (Florence-Lauderdale Public Library Board)
5 members - 5 year terms. This is an advisory board to the Director of the local library and to the Mayor and City Council.  Gives advice on the needs and programs of the local library.

Library Board (Lauderdale County Regional Library System Board)
7 members - 3 year terms (2 City appointed, 1 County appointed, 1 City/County appointed, 1 Killen appointed, 1 Lexington appointed, and 1 Rogersville appointed.) Established January 10, 1992. The purpose of this board is to administer the established regional library system by upholding the by-laws and policies set forth for the Board of Trustees.

Planning Commission
9 members - Mayor appointed (1 City official, 1 City Council representative) - 6 year terms.  Meets 4th Tuesday of each month. The Planning Commission was established by ordinance on May 27, 1940.  The Zoning Ordinance section of the City Code stipulates the Planning Commission's authority.  In general, this includes any zoning decisions; street and alley vacations; technical considerations such as traffic, street improvements and storm water detention for housing developments and shopping centers; and approval of the subdivision of property.  The Planning Commission is a recommending body in all zoning and street and alley vacations.  The City Council has the final authority.

Florence-Lauderdale County Port Authority - Board of Directors
City/County Joint Board - 5 members (2 City appointed, 2 County appointed, and 1 City/County appointed) - 5 year terms. This board is responsible for the development of the port and advises the two governing bodies of the City and County.  Has authority to set policies.

Riverbend Center for Mental Health - Board of Directors
City/County Joint Board - 6 members (3 City appointed, 3 County appointed) - 6 year terms.  Responsible for the proper administration of the Mental Health Center.  Sets policies and advises the administration.

Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Board
5 members (2 City appointed, 2 County appointed, and 1 City/County appointed) - four year terms. Originated in and passed by the House on June 13, 1995, Act 95-306, H. 665. This board is responsible for marketing and promoting the natural resources and attractions of the Florence and Lauderdale County area as a tourist destination and administration of the lodging tax collected by lodging facilities.

Florence Tree Commission
7 members - 3 year terms. Established October 6, 1987. Responsibilities are to study, investigate, counsel, develop and/or update annually, and administer a written plan for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal or disposition of trees and shrubs in parks, along streets, and in other public areas.  Co-sponsors a Tree Workshop each year in February.

Board of Zoning Adjustments
5 members, 2 supernumerary members - 3 year terms. Meets the 1st Thursday of each month. This board works closely with the Planning Commission.  Appeals are made to this board concerning the Building Official's interpretation of the zoning regulations.  Considers variances and special exceptions to the Zoning Ordinance.

Downtown Florence Alliance/Florence Shooting

A reader has asked us for information on the Downtown Florence Alliance (DFA). Here's a few interesting facts:

1. The DFA was formed in 2018 when Downtown Florence Unlimited and Florence Main Street combined.

2. The organization has a web page; however, the last published listing is December 2023.

3. The website presents photos of various downtown attractions including the murals on the side of the former Fred's location. The murals were removed c. February 2022.

4. The website lists eight board members and 23 "members." The latter must belong to a sub-group, but what?

In short, the website needs help, and we can't blame our reader for asking questions.

Monsters of Muscle Shoals

From a Muscle Shoals reader:

Living in the "Swamp" Muscle Shoals, you quickly learn: Water stands after rains, mainly because there is little or no maintenance of ditches, drainage culverts, and upgrades. The current city hall residents think digging another mosquito habitat / aka pond, is a brilliant idea.

Meanwhile, beware if you dare to plan outside activities, you will have uninvited guests called mosca - better known in the south as mosquitos or simply skeeters. Mind you, with the many breeding grounds for the famous southern mosquito, the dangers are many if that wretched little beast sets up camp on your property. Hide your children, hide your pets, hide your body and keep the doors and windows closed.

If they can't manage all the millions we pay in taxes and services to take precautionary measures like storm drainage and mosquito eradication, they are more than incompetent. Did someone say there is an election in 2025?

VOTE THEM ALL OUT.

The Hendrix/Dombrowski Moral Dilemma

The truth is slowly emerging about Debra Anne Dombrowski's position in the City of Florence. It's nothing new. Councilman Hendrix had secured his wife a seat on the tree commission quite some time ago. As for it paying "nothing," we'll let you be the judge of that, as well as to whether it's ethical or not.

Each member is paid 100.00 per month...or they're paid nothing. It depends on whom one asks and what one calls "nothing." Hendrix was chair and may have been paid more. No matter, it could amount to at least $2,400.00 per year for a husband and wife. Again we say, is this ethical? There are seven members, meaning that Henski (she's wife number two and he's husband number three according to credit reports) makes up 27.5% of that body.

For this $100.00 per month (or zilch), each commissioner attends a short monthly meeting. Once a year, a symposium of sorts is offered to the public. We will assume meals are provided during the planning and execution of the symposium. Someone provides the chairs, marquees, and whatever for this annual event. Is it Party Pros, a company owned by Hendrix? He recently furnished the necessities for the city's Memorial Day event.

We have assumed Hendrix would be stepping down from the tree commission. Now that the public knows the truth, obviously both need to exit stage right. Instead of having friends attack media that promote honesty, they need at least to avoid the appearance of evil.

The past few days or so we've been seeing more and more posters from around the country offering their opinions on national elections. We're willing to let some of these comments stand no matter which side of the aisle they represent; however, we're also seeing some new words, or at least words not on our blocked list.

No matter the candidate, Democrat or Republican, any vulgar reference to the female body will be deleted and the poster will be banned permanently. That would also usually go for male body, but let's face it, some are horses' patoots. Tread carefully.

Florence District 2 and the Unhappy Marriage

We once had a friend who married an Army officer right out of college. She quickly added two sons to the union...and a lot of black eyes. Her husband would hit them whenever he felt like it, which was often. He also kept tight strings on the family purse, generally making their lives a living hell.

What love my friend originally felt for her husband eventually turned to indifference and then to something else. While it sounds cold, the wife's one hope in life was the fact that men in her husband's family usually died young. The husband was heavily insured with all sorts of military policies, and she hoped to one day have a fulfilling life for herself.

Then one day, the husband came home and announced he had met a woman at the officer's club. He was divorcing her and starting a new life. The day after the divorce was final, the now ex-husband married his new girlfriend and changed the beneficiary on his life insurance.

Two weeks later, he dropped dead.

That's pretty much the way things have gone in District 2 in Florence. After years of putting up with Dick Jordan, the citizens thought they would now have a chance to elect an honest candidate with no hidden interests. They had no idea that Dick would name his successor.

In less than a month, the good ol' boy friendships and nepotism have already started. The residents of District 2 pretty much feel as our friend did. All those years of hope dashed. Prizes to pigs and all that.

Florence recently had a runaway calf. The young bovine bolted to Martin Park to hide. It was a good choice - Florence officer Luke Green couldn't name the location.

Sure, it's funny, but what if it had been a small plane crash or similar emergency? "Well, it's that recreational area. You know the one I mean."

Shouldn't there have been a test on Florence geography before he was hired?

Humbly Rent a Billboad

There were a few important issues on the agenda for the Florence City council meeting on 08/20/2024. But from the participation of those who were in attendance and the small number of people who were watching the streaming of the work session and the council meeting online, it appears most citizens either had forgotten about the meeting or did not care. After all, we are in the middle of a national election season. It has always amazed me that the same people who will memorize political positions of a candidate to argue and the shoe size of their favorite national candidate cannot be bothered with local politics. In Florence, what is decided on Pine St. sometimes affects you as much or more than what is decided on Pennsylvania Ave. Think of that the next time you check out at Walmart and pay your city tax! Most people seem not to realize this.

Unless, they have an agenda. Project Say Something and Camille Goldston Bennett have an agenda. This group was instrumental in the protest downtown in 2020 at the time of the nationwide protests over the George Floyd death at the hands of Minneapolis police. She and her “group” took up the cause that was sweeping the nation to destroy or move confederate monuments. The one in front of the Lauderdale County courthouse had been at the location since the building’s construction in 1963 and before that in front of the “old” courthouse when it was dedicated at the turn of the 19th century. This group has promoters and detractors. Many people who were even in favor of the cause the group espoused were repelled by the antics of the group downtown. Especially those trying to eat al fresco
downtown on a nice summer evening.

Mrs. Bennett and those associated with PSS like to label anyone who does not agree with their position concerning the confederate monument as racist. Their latest victims are Jimmy Oliver and Blake Edwards. A while back, there was a resolution on the agenda for the council to vote to place a plaque on a small strip of land that the city owns in the block where the county courthouse now stands. The group got enough support from some on the council to get an agenda item at a meeting authorizing the placement of a plaque. At the time of the vote: Michele Eubanks and Kaytrina Simmons voted to place the marker at the courthouse. Blake Edwards, Dick Jordan and Jimmy Oliver voted against the placement. Bill Griffin was “absent” for the meeting.

As I recall, at the meeting Dick Jordan sort of mumbled something about this would need to be approved by the state and Blake Edwards sort of mumbled that the city should not do something that may usurp the county's authority. Did Blake know about news of back taxes owed to the county that had not been revealed at that time? When you owe over 2 million in back taxes for retail alcohol sales that is something to tread lightly with. And Jimmy Oliver stated he did not agree with the first four words on the marker itself: “ALL FLORENCE CITIZENS AGREE” Jimmy does have a point. Not ALL Florence citizens or citizens of any other place on earth could get the entire population to agree on anything. Why not just change the wording? Compromise? Instead, Project Say Something is renting billboards calling council people who did not support them “racist”. I found it really amusing that Camille Goldston Bennett came to the podium for “remarks from the public” and stated she was making a “humble” request. She didn’t pull out a Samurai sword or anything but given the display her group had made public with a BILLBOARD, her "humility” is questionable!

The other points: Garbage rates are going up. The first step for the Eugene Sak/Hard Rock/Reverb hotel got everyone's approval but Michelle Eubanks. Mrs. Eubanks is a councilwoman who follows her conviction. She has tried from Day 1 to bring to light the way Eugene Sak has let the trailer park he owns and rents (Hearn Trailer Park) become a public nuisance. She has succeeded but it appears she is the only person on the council who cares. The others consistently support Eugene Sak.

A funny side note is during the public hearing on those either for or against the “Pig in a Sak” on Court Street, only one person spoke against it. Apostle Billy Ray Simpson warned against supporting the project due to its name. HARD ROCK! It is a good point, come to think of it! The city could find itself between a rock and a hard place if Sak backs out or cannot get the funding. Ask the tenants of Eugene Sak at Hearn Trailer Park!

The Big Dombrowski

Mrs. Dick Jordan v. 2

Former District 2 Council member Dick Jordan was famous for getting his wife jobs, and apparently Jivin' Jackie Hendrix Jr. is rapidly following in Jordan's footsteps. So, without further ado, we present the Big Dombrowski, Florence's newest ???

Is she or isn't she...the new City of Florence Tree Commissioner?

Her name is Debra, she sometimes calls herself and Jivin's Jackie "Henski," and she can tell time (according to her LinkedIn profile). A reliable source says the City has made the Big Dombrowski the new tree commissioner to replace her husband (she's wife number two) who was the chair.

Onward and upward!

Take This Taco and ...

The vice presidential candidates should be switched. It remains to be seen how many single childless women totally abhor Vance who wrote an entire autobiography about the shortcomings of his mother and grandmother, but it's obvious courting the female vote isn't Vance's strong point.

On Walz's side, he's getting a lot of flak about his...taco joke. The name Walz is as Spanish as Lawrence Welk's, so he obviously didn't grow up in a home with Tuesday Night Tacos. Nothing but cheese? We know someone who prefers NO toppings. That's not counting tomatoes, but see how you feel to pay extra for those red darlings and Taco Bell gives you zilch...

The only facts that were not in dispute were that Eric Wayne Boyd drove away from the scene, his brother in tow, where the body of Danny Sledge lay in a pool of blood, later helping Nathan spend money from Sledge's cash register. Convicted of Felony murder, Boyd has again lost a bid for parole. Eric will once more be up for parole consideration in 2029.

Have a Look at Hearn Mobile Home Park

Hearn Mobile Home Park

County Road 47

Florence, AL

The above trailer appears to be vacant. We're not sure how many homes on this lot are occupied, but most look the same. The property is in District 4 which is served by Michelle Eubanks.

There have long been disputes over this property, but Councilman Jimmy Oliver states there have been no infractions within the past 60 days. Is there a waiting list for these units? We doubt it.

Who lives in these manufactured homes? A good guess is those who are used to these conditions and use their income for other things. Why don't they go to social services? Another good guess is that they're afraid for whatever reasons.

Has the building department been involved, or has it been too busy with the signage on Mitchell Boulevard? How about the health department?

Just who owns this mobile home park? Eugene Sak. Yes, the same businessman currently requesting special assistance from the city, the former employer of special council appointee Jackie Hendrix Jr.

Colbert County Animal Shelter Meeting

When: 9:00 a.m. Friday, August 16th

Where: Muscle Shoals City Hall

Now's the time to make your needs and problems known!

Kronos is Back and He's Looking for his Brother (the WVNA Sign)

Once thought obliterated in an atomic attack in 1957, Kronos has managed to revive and return to earth looking for his younger brother Kranos. After leaving the family fold, Kranos took up residence in the Shoals where he is said to have dug in, taking a job as a weatherman of sorts after crashing in the backyard of Roger Bedford in 1975.

Kranos did well until the flood of 1991, when his health began to deteriorate, but the Darby family considered him an illegal alien and refused him insurance.

Now Kronos is returning, bringing his wrath to the City of Florence. Will new District 2 member Jivin' Jackie Hendrix Jr. save the City by making the Darby family finally assist Kranos?

We'll be checking in on the situation regularly - that is if we're here...

We got a dig in at Ben Shapiro last week, so now it's Matt Walsh's turn. He called the ever lovely Raygun a PhD student. Actually, Gunn has her PhD in cultural studies...and still can't dance.
