We recently blogged on Kathy Aaron, a Muscle Shoals resident who last year took part in the robbery of her former employer. After any blog, we usually receive e-mails concerning the perps. We usually clean them up...if we publish them at all; however, Kathy seems so nice and all, here's the goods:
I went to H.S. with Kathy (maiden name Smith) Aaron. She was a 1977
graduate of Russellville High School. We were in band together for a few
years.
She was a mean, freckle faced little bully to the younger band members, but
I
got along with her because I get along with almost everyone, and because I
thought she was funny trying to boss the smaller kids around. (Not too
mature
of me, I guess).
Years later, she went to work in Russellville at what was then Harco
Drug.
Tim Aaron was hired there as a pharmacist, and over time, they dated and
then
married. They have been divorced for many years now. Tim used to be, well, not very attractive, but likeable, and most of us
felt that she married him because he had a better career than she would ever
have. Now, he looks much better and has a very pretty wife. I went to
college
with him.
At one time, Kathy was said to be a druggie, around the time she was
working in the drug store. I don’t know if she straightened up that part of
her
life or not before turning to larceny.

I grew up in Tuscumbia during the 1940's. At that time Sheffield was the bright and shining star on this side of the river. They had it all. Manufacturing, auto dealers, both new and used; grocery stores, furniture stores, hotels, hardware stores, little cafes, two movie theaters, drug stores, Dr's offices, two pool rooms, Sheffield utilities, several large churches, lots of small ones, good fire deprtment, police force, (even had one or two motorcycle cops), and just to add to all of this they also had Southern Railway Yards, Roundhouse, car repair shop, large depot and several other railroad related businesses. Sounds like they had it all, goodness they even had a minnow farm but!!!, all you could hear, (other than the fact they were going to totally take over Tuscumbia), was bitch and moan about the railroad. Well what do we have now? The railroad closed the car shop, closed the roundhouse, discontinued passenger service thus eliminating the depot, and moved the yards. The only thing left is the main line coming thru town, (from the hoopla), you would think Sheffield is the only town in the USA that has train crossings. I have sat in Tupelo and waited just as long as i did in Sheffield. I wait the same time in Cherokee as there are at least 6 scheduled coal trains and two scheduled freights every day.. I am sorry i jumped the track. My original thought for all ofthis is Sheffield got what they asked for. Southern left and so did a lot of the others. Businesses closed or moved away. Tuscumbia is live and well and is probably the best hope for Sheffield to survive. I don't think a sign on the river is going to attrack much attention. Yet after all of this; you still hear overpass, underpass, move the railroad. Yep; that is the solution to Sheffield's problems.
