Alabama law requires motorists to stop for a school or church bus loading or unloading passengers (flashing lights). What if the driver doesn't stop?
The fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus in Alabama is based on the number of offenses, and includes other penalties:
First offense
A fine of $150–$300
Second offense
A fine of $300–$500, 100 hours of community service, and a 30-day driver's license suspension
Third offense
A fine of $500–$1,000, 200 hours of community service, and a 90-day driver's license suspension
Fourth offense or subsequent offenses
A fine of $1,000–$3,000, a one-year driver's license suspension, and a Class C felony
The Chisholm Road/Forest Hills area of Florence is a serious problem, but we're sure there are problems in many more areas. Many say police are overlooking these drivers.
At least one Florence parent has created a Facebook page to call these drivers out. Let's hope they get the message.
I'd LOVE to see local police address those that SPEED THROUGH SCHOOL ZONES. Unfortunately, some local school officials (Nelson, for one), frown on such enforcement. Why?
