Who is James K. Pharr & Just What Does He Know?

A few readers have asked us about Vina High School Principal James K. Pharr and how much he knew of at least two sex scandals in his school. Obviously, we can't say what Pharr knew...or to use the old cliche'...just when he knew it.

Pharr was raised in Hackleburg and received his teaching degree from the University of North Alabama. In 2010, the Franklin County Board of Education renewed his contract as principal of the small county high school. Pharr was principal when a married female teacher began a sexual affair with a student over ten years her junior. Now another married teacher has initiated an affair under Pharr's watch.

If the latest news accounts are correct, it was the family of Sonny Tibbs' victim/lover that informed authorities of the affair--not school officials. We didn't have to dig too deeply to discover that Pharr is a coach himself and leads the Red Devils football team.

It's beginning to look a little like a good ol' boy network, isn't it? We hope the Franklin County Board of Education will hold anyone responsible who knew about Coach Sonny Tibb's sexploits with students...but we're not holding our breath.

We haven't done an actual count of how many secondary schools are in the Lauderdale/Colbert/Franklin area. Counting non-public schools, an estimate would number close to 20. Of these 20 or so schools, the only two reported cases of teacher-student sex have been at one school in Franklin County...and not a very large school at that. Either such cases are grossly under reported or the problems at Vina are so out of control that no responsible parent would send their child to that school.

  1. Maybe the Franklin County DA will do the right thing and reinstate charges on Kimberly Bynum...then he can have a twofer...

  2. I guess the good thing about having a blog is you don't have to get your facts straight before you publish...

    2. A fact you seem to have ignored for a while is that Bynum was NOT married at the time of the relationship. She had been divorced from Ronnie-boy's son for a while when the relationship started. Any student can tell you that.

    3. Public record shows they were divorced in January, the same month the sexual component of the relationship supposedly began (by Bynum's own admission, although it seems awfully convenient). The thousands upon thousands of text messages, hours of phone calls, fun-trips, gifts, cash money, and the like began well before that.

  3. My question for you is what do you know? The answer is nothing. I went to vina high school for three years. the teachers are great and Mr Pharr is a godly man. this is a load of crap. I went to school when one of the teacher student relationships happened and the guy was in my grade and none of us knew. the teachers and schools are not the only ones to put blame!! EVER THOUGHT OF STUDENTS SLEEPING AROUND. happens all the time and of these kids are waving themselves around someone's eventually gunna get it.

    1. If you had correctly processed what you read, you would realize that no one blamed anyone else but the two participants for the affair itself; however, such things are extremely hard to cover up, and we'll bet the farm that many (some of them in authority) knew and said nothing. Whether Pharr was one of those who knew or not remains to be seen.

  4. Pharr is a godly man who had a very positive impact on me in my time at Vina High School. He is a great person who taught me so much. -Brody Roberts

  5. My issue is that straying from the story of what Coach Tibbs admitted to. Stick to that story and if people have an issue with Mr.Pharr then take that up with the school board. I think it is sad that whether or not Vina won a game or not is more important to some than the fact that Tibbs admitted to this relationship with a MINOR!

  6. I have two daughters that graduated from vina and I always found Mr. Pharr to be a good and fair man that was interested in the children there. That being said it's also deplorable for a teacher to do what these two have done and yes I said two because there is also another male teacher doing the same . If Randy Hester would do something other than trying to show how much of a big shot he is and actually help out this May not have went this far . What these men have done has destroyed a lot of trust in parents and students alike and also ruined children that actually look up to teachers as role models .

  7. If you know James Pharr then you know he spends all his time working with football and other athletics. If he spent the his time doing what he was paid to do and expected to do Vina might no be in this situation. James Pharr's incompetence is astounding that a principle can push aside all of his responsibilities to coach a football team instead of doing his job like he is supposed to do. Vina Students Deserve better and Franklin County Does too.
