Show the Way (Thank You, David Carson)

The following is a guest editorial:

For newcomers and those unfamiliar with Florence, finding a Florence city council meeting was a little like playing “Where’s Waldo.” It was held at city hall but the exact room was never stated and an address never given on the FB page. Having had a hard time finding the location himself when he first went to a council meeting, David Carson told the council about the difficulty he and others had when attempting to find the meeting hall.

He proposed that a sign be made showing the meeting time and progress. He waited. For OVER two years. In the meantime, he and others who posted on the city FB page were constantly getting questions regarding the location of the council meeting. Even those who were “native” Florentines had a hard time explaining how to get to the meetings.

The old “fire station”?? Across from the former “Comcast” building? There was not even a visible address! It seems David Carson decided to get a sign made himself! He designed it, had it printed, and brought it for display at the Sept. 5th meeting. And the council’s reaction? Two stated they had “thought” of a sign and “appreciate” Mr. Carson actually making one. The others?? CRICKETS! Perhaps, this council purposely wants to conduct city business with as little input from the citizens as possible?!? Thank you David Carson for “showing the way”!

We have not yet had a chance to view the last council meeting, so we do not know which council members thanked Mr. Carson for his actions. We do know it's highly unlikely that Mayor Andy Betterton thanked Carson. After all, he recently appointed the man who openly ridiculed David to a department head post:

Florence Department Head Brian Murphy

  1. Very few city councils WANT public attendance or input at meetings. They make the absolute minimum efforts to do so in b order to be able to say they abided by state Sunshin laws.
