Colbert Has Area's Highest STD Rate

If you're tired of Colbert County always being last in northwest Alabama, rejoice. That county is now number one...in sexually transmitted diseases. According to the latest health department statistics, the rate is 8.7 per 1K of the population. Lauderdale is next with 7.4. The most common infection is chlamydia, with syphilis being second.

The healthiest county, sexually speaking? That's Marion with only 4.4 per 1K infected. There you go, readers - choose your dating pool carefully.

Conceivably that rate could rise if the SCOTUS revisits the public's right to birth control which includes condoms. We were shocked to learn that it is still technically a federal crime to sell birth control. The court declared access to birth control a right in 1972, but if Clarence Thomas has his way, that could change.

Shh! Don't tell our state legislature. They might decide to pass a state law backing up the federal Comstock law. After all, they'll do anything to get out of expanding Medicaid for the state's low income children.

  1. After being gone for about 33 years I moved home in 2020. Of course I visited throughout the years, but I didn’t pay much attention to things. But in 2020 I noticed the number of billboards about sexually transmitted diseases. When I left in 1987 such billboards would be unthinkable. I’m not saying promiscuity didn’t exist in 1987, but we either didn’t need billboard warnings or things have gotten bad.

All things considered, we shouldn’t have this “honor.” Yet here we are. Since it seems we retain this honor in 2022 I am guessing the billboards from 2020 didn’t work. I look around to see what is missing since 1987. What are our young folks supposed to be doing? Malls are mostly boarded up. Not much left of youth gathering spots unless you want to cruise McFarland Park blasting your music. Everything is focused on the “over 21” crowd. Anybody wonder why?

I’ve lived all over the country and I have noticed the key to a town’s success is the young folks. Maybe we need to spend a little bit more time with them than expecting them to read a billboard to catch a hint. The answers are all around us and have weeds and mold growing all over them.

    1. For quite some time, there was such a billboard that one couldn't miss while sitting in line at the BK drive-thru on Florence Blvd. It certainly was not a good appetizer while waiting for a burger and fries. We doubt that it's an efficient use of funding.
