We trust everyone was able to identify Kryton easily (he was in the third photo), but how about distinguishing between McGee's concept from six years ago and Wedderspoon's current repugnant offering? (Oops, sorry, we see that one out of ten thousand readers liked it...)
The Florence statue was originally slated for Memorial Park on East Tennessee Street, but has now been relegated to the Bluff Street/Mitchell Boulevard intersection to scare Colbert Countians away. The next time you hear someone say Florence has too many fountains, be sure to ask if they want more statues?
Oh, wait. We have it! When this terrible tooter (second photo) is in place, no one will bother to worry about the Confederate war memorial at the court house.

And this makes me think of the recent "insult de jour" that has manufactured outrage over the confederate monument in front of the Lauderdale County Courthouse. Blacks and some whites may be "insulted" but the statute itself is ART. And the craftsmanship is obvious. In reading the article about a "meeting" held by the NAACP, it was suggested that an accompanying statue of James T Rapier be erected alongside the confederate statute to honor black participation during the time of the civil war. This would all be well and good except for the fact that of the "statutes" that have been erected in the last 30 years look more like something built from an erector set than actual chiseled art from stone. Granted they are made of aluminum, steel, old transmission parts, etc. etc. but with the exception of the pigmy WC HANDY at Wilson Park,most look like overgrown children's toys. THEY ARE TACKY! I don't know whether the art of sculptor has decreased or if artist nowadays are lazy or unable to work with stone, but just LOOK around town. The confederate statues and few others which were done in the last century have and will last as artistic pieces through time. The "Elvis". the "bugs", the "singers" may not rust but they will not gracefully age. And they will remain TACKY. Why not respect the craftsmanship that goes into an artistic piece, and tell the TRUTH about it. Not the "fufu" version.
