From "Junebug":
Did I Miss Something?
Bernie Delinski with the Times Daily said it best when he wrote that it was difficult to walk around the University of North Alabama without seeing the former vice President’s imprint. Dr. Dan Howard passed away on January 30th and will be missed by so many within the UNA and Shoals community. Not only did he do a lot to support and grow UNA, he and his wife, Anne, raised Leo III and UNA by hand and Dr. Dan was also a huge supporter of the Boy Scouts and many other community organizations.
Arkansas State University, where Dr. Howard left UNA to become the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and research, and provost, offered a touching news release after his passing. Louisiana State University at Alexandria, where Dr. Howard served as their Chancellor, also offered their official condolences to both the higher education community and Dr. Howard’s family.
Nothing, however, has come out from UNA. Have I missed something?
For everything Dr. Howard did for UNA, one would think a simple news statement would have been the least they could have done. We all know that Dr. Howard was pushed out of UNA by former President Bill Cale. Walking around the campus, one doesn’t see much of Cale’s footprint, but he wanted Dr. Howard gone, and he got his wish. It is interesting that, later, ole Billy was forced out when Communist China’s millionaire, Chairman Zhang Zhiting, abruptly pulled out of the fishy-smelling integrative health program that was to be housed at the site of the old Florence Country Club. Did anyone actually think a health program would survive next to the landfill?
Meanwhile, thin-skinned Kitts is clearly a puppet to a greater master and timidly turns his back while Carnes, the business dean, rakes in tens of thousands of dollars in unethical course subsidies (on top of his $260,000 salary!). This is not the UNA of Dr. Howard’s making. We need more Dr. Howards in the world who offer a higher caliber of moral standing and selfless service. UNA undoubtedly forgot (or wanted to forget) that they had the original on campus for many years. Now he is gone and UNA festers in the sewer of public corruption.
