Should We Respect the Muscle Shoals Police Department?

We have never understood why so many think actual laws on the books, like them or not, are merely suggestions. Drive an ATV, UTV, or golf cart on city streets in Florence or Killen? Prepare to receive a citation with a huge fine attached. Drive one in Muscle Shoals? A reader has a surprising comment:

I thought there was an Alabama law that said you couldn't operate motorized vehicles on streets and highways that were not licensed and registered with DMV?

But then again, we don't want to teach our little darlings to respect the laws - it's obvious there is no reason to respect the MSPD since they turn a blind eye to the entitled ones.

I believe Shoalanda had some interest in golf carts running around in Muscle Shoals. This was parked by two teenage girls probably no more than 13. Walgreens parking lot.

The sad thing is that if these two teens were killed on this cart while on Muscle Shoals city streets, the families who let them drive would blame the MSPD for not enforcing traffic rules. This is far from the first complaint we've had about golf carts mingling in 45 mph traffic in that city.

Where are the police?

Now a word from our dear friend Aunt Jane:

I'm not sure the person who needs to hear this will be reading, but let's all pray that she is. If you're hurt over something, I'm so very sorry. Hurts can mend; divorces rarely do. Rest assured there's a pathetic rich widow out there sharpening her claws to latch onto your man even as I write this. There always is. Pride is a very cold companion on winter nights. Think about what I've said before you make the mistake of your life...

  1. The City of Sheffield Housing Authority regularly runs all over town in golf carts, as does the City of Decatur Housing Authority.

  2. To answer the Title "Should We Respect the Muscle Shoals Police Department?" .....
Respect has to be earned. If you've ever attended a MS City meeting dealing with the MSPD Budget, or have seen the annual Budget allotment, you would tend to mutter, "Heck No.". The word 'Bloated' comes to mind...

  3. Shoalanda Speaks doesn't respect a single person so isn't it ironic she is the one demanding it?!?!?🤷 They have STREET LEGAL golf carts now that go 45 and have real seatbelts...yes must have a driver's license to be legal but otherwise it is.

    1. Just where have we "demanded" respect?

Second, current law in Alabama allows golf carts only if: Golf carts used on the designated streets have to be registered and inspected. Required equipment includes seat belts (lap or shoulder), head lights, brake lights, turn signals (front and rear), windshield, rear view mirror or side mirrors, operable brakes, steering wheel, tires in good condition, front and rear red reflectors, slow-moving vehicle reflector tape on the bottom rear bumper, and an orange warning flag six feet above the ground.

We don't believe any streets in Muscle Shoals are designated for these off-road vehicles, particularly Avalon and Woodward. Therefore, you seem to be batting zero in your criticism.

    2. To 'Unknown': I defy you to show how the golf cart pictured is remotely 'street legal.

  4. I think we'd all be safer if the entire SHOALS area PD's enforced traffic laws. Driving looks more like walking in a crowded mall than an orderly movement with lines, signals and signs.
One that just kills me is the Utrun into a parking space on Court Street. All the time.

  5. I agree 100%. Working traffic isn't glamorous, yet it IS one of the most important functions LEOs can perform, usually with the added benefit of visible results. BTDT (former LEO).
