Leighton Memories & Walnut Street Images

Leighton Councilwoman and Police Commissioner Teresa Lannaman is set to go to trial on harassment charges October 13th. A Federal investigation into the mayor's office is said to be ongoing. Is this really what the small Colbert County town is like? According to our friend Lecia Ford, there once was more to her hometown. Here's a beautiful take on the glory that was once Leighton.

Leighton Memories

As a former resident of the great town of Leighton, place of my childhood, teenage years and young adult romping grounds, I must defend it, to a point. As the result of a divorce, I moved, I moved from a place I called home. It never really seemed the same after my daddy died anyway.

I recall hearing my aunt talk of Leighton, the boom town, the cotton king, so many people on the streets, you couldn’t stir ‘em with a stick. A tale of her and my grandmother, on the streets one Saturday night, had to lay down in the floorboard of the car in order to keep from being hit by stray bullets.

Not a drive-by, mind you, but a gun fight, a real gun fight…between a crook and the Chief of Police, Mr. Henry J. Searcy, I think his name was. My aunt tells that there were bullets ricocheting off the bumper. The crowd dispersed at the sound of death, the Chief has been shot! The crook/murderer surrendered to townsfolk.

Later on, another crook, was being closed in on by Adrian Lowry (my aunt’s husband), Leighton Police Officer, on the infamous Sixth Street when they both wrecked. The wreck confined Adrian to a hospital bed with numerous broken bones. The crook surrendered. And my uncle earned the nickname Deputy Dog, although he didn’t like it one bit, but then he didn’t like the name Deacon either.

My daddy owned Leighton Cleaners for nearly 49 years. He was an honest man, who taught me integrity, to never lie, cheat or steal to get through life. He taught me in order to make in this ‘ol world you got have morals, character, or you have nothing...

I would like to add also that my daddy never carried the deposits home with him, he never kept guns around. The money from an honest day’s work, was walked across the street to Bank Independent and deposited. A bank owned and run by Ed Mauldin at that time, who offered my daddy a loan with a handshake, when the boiler needed to be replaced. And oh yes, he did own a gun, a Pearl handle 38, that he used to kill snakes…It was always hidden, out of reach of the kids, and never, never was there any cash just ‘laying’ around, especially $350,000 in cash.

And I guess I said all that to say this about Robert Ricks, Robert was an honest man, a good decent man and to be accused of getting kickbacks for automobile repairs? You have got to be kidding…It all came out though, through the system, the judicial system. Who do you believe? A fly by night repairman, or a citizen? A citizen that would have given his shirt off his back to anyone.

"I have given consideration and weight to Mr. Ricks history and characteristics. He has no prior criminal record," she said. "His conviction is certainly not consistent with his prior life of 60 years."

NOW that is what I am talking about…reputation, character…

Second chances? Sure everyone deserves a second chance, but it’s what you do with that second chance that makes the difference. And the third, fourth and so on and so on.

A second chance is about making a change from one behavior to another. A chance to have a better outcome of a situation. A chance to move forward and not go back, to old habits, old ways, old behaviors…

It makes me ashamed to say I am from Leighton. It makes it hard to go back there, and try to salvage anything desirable from the corruption that takes place in a town that is run by crooks…on every corner.

And how do the citizens of Leighton feel about this? Proud?

Apologies to Lecia for not getting this published earlier. We hope she will continue to contribute her vivid memories to both us and the new Shoals magazine The Connection.

While everything changes, some things at least appear to be both unscathed and undiminished by the the hands of time. Here's a wonderful link to the homes located in the Walnut Street Historic District.

Walnut Historic District

Of course, even these houses do occasionally change...take a good look at 502 Walnut Street, labeled as a cottage. If you like it, be sure to save the photograph. Current owner, developer Jimmy Neese, has added a sizable addition to the original structure.

Should Our News Be Censored?

All the news that fits? Well, the TimesDaily isn't the Rolling Stone, and we're glad it isn't. We prefer to read the local news sans strings of profanity. Yet, just what should be censored?

Perhaps no two reporters or editors will find the same facts important, but we do wonder at much of what is omitted from the TimesDaily. Here's a few recent examples:

Teresa Lannahan arrest: While the TD did eventually report the arrest of the Leighton Town Council member, it failed to mention that Lannahan is the police commissioner of that Colbert County town.

Whitesell Mfg.: The TD did hit the highlights of the OSHA investigation into cost-cutting measures at Whitesell's two local facilities, but failed to report one of the most salient points. From WAFF...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration called the inspection of Whitesell Corporation in Colbert County the worst inspection they have done on an Alabama organization in a decade.

Cherokee: Okay, we'll give them a pass on this one. If they printed all the shenanigans in that unfair city, it would cause a world shortage of ink.

Have you read Osborne Ink's most recent blog? If not, be sure to check it out. Matt tells it like it is concerning UNA's proposed move to Division I athletics: Link

*****

The Lauderdale District Court Race: So far, both Carole Coil Medley and James Hall have run super clean campaigns. We've heard Florence Deputy Chief Tim Shaddix has placed signs supporting Medley at many of his rental properties, while much of the Florence Police Department is supporting Hall. We call it neck and neck at this point.

Who Shot Thelma & Other Pressing Questions

From our e-mail in-box:

Who took the photos of Thelma Lambert? We have no idea. If any of our readers can shed light on this question, please contact us.

Why hasn't the TD reported on Teresa Lannahan's arrest for harassment? Possibly because it's a misdemeanor. We reported on the Leighton Police Commissioner's arrest in part due to information that it's the tip of the iceberg in Leighton. More arrests will follow.

Why is Long-Lewis suing ***** *****? We have no idea on that one either, but if anyone seeks info about a small claim case, the District Judge's office in each county should be able to provide it over the phone.

What's the status of the Lauderdale County Commission investigating George Grabryan? A source at the Lauderdale courthouse tells us the investigation is just getting started, will cover the entire EMA department, and will produce some startling results. We're also hearing basically the same thing from sources outside the courthouse. Stay tuned...

Tyrants, Tyranny, and Transgressions: A Tale of Three Cities

A Guest Commentary By

J.J. Ray

Lightning has struck again in Northwest Alabama. Cherokee and Leighton best known for their nonsensical governance once again rose to the occasion. We have on one hand the police commissioner being arrested in Leighton after the mayor has been accused of various sex crimes. Next, a city council member in Cherokee trying to become the next Linda Lovelace or Paris Hilton of city government by posting some less than attractive pictures on her Facebook page. After viewing these pictures, it gives the term cellulite a complete new meaning. Who took these less than porno pictures anyway and why? Once upon a time, in my teenage years, I was a closet cheerleader for Playboy Magazine but as I matured that urge went away, perhaps the city council member should consider some type of therapy or grow up.

That leaves us with the mayor of Cherokee who changed the locks at city hall while Melinda Malone was at training. Did he get even this time? Of course, there is the constant battle of the Hatfields and McCoys in Cherokee and lewd Lawayne the tyrant mayor in Leighton dictating to the business folks on how and when they will conduct their businesses.

Wow and it’s just Monday. I shudder to think what will happen later on in the week. These two towns with their petty tyrant mayors and dysfunctional city councils get more internet publicity than Glenn Beck does. Sarah Palin will be envious. There are of course the alleged investigations pending of both nefarious towns and its offenders. This should keep the tongues wagging and the keyboards clicking for a month.

Really, folks, is it not time these people cease and desist their childish behavior or vacate their positions and allow some mature individuals to govern--if Governor Riley can find some? So far, his batting average is not too first-rate. Both towns have become the laughing stock of Alabama and maybe the country. When are the citizens going to say enough?

Finally yet importantly, we dare not forget Tuscumbia where we have a chief of police convicted of DUI still patrolling and carrying a firearm. However, that conviction is on appeal again.

There you have it--tyrants, tyranny, and transgressions with dysfunctional city councils. Where is the lame media when you need them? Asleep at the wheel I suspect, or are they too apathetic to cover the stories? Maybe a call to The Tri-Cycle Daily is in order, if you can get anyone to answer the phone.

Where Do You Get Your News?/Cherokee Mayor Arrested?

While we basically offer political commentary, there's a certain amount of news in many of our columns. Why? This news, and we consider it important political news, is not to be found in the TimesDaily, aka TotallyDecatur. If the TD does publish much of this news, it's one or two days after it appears either here or in the ShoalsInsider.

Like many, we hoped this would improve when Shelton Publishing took over the operations of our daily newspaper. Instead, it seems to have gotten worse. We have yet to read in the TD about the arrest of Leighton Police Commissioner Teresa Lannahan.

Then again, if the TD printed all the political news from Leighton and Cherokee, there wouldn't be room for the comics...or, perhaps, they would just be redundant.

Things just get more interesting in Cherokee. From C. R.:

Keeper of the Keys: Part Two

Sunday night after 9:00 p.m. Cherokee Town Clerk Melinda Malone found the locks to the clerk’s office changed. Melinda Malone called the police officer on duty and demanded a report be filled out. The officer refused because no crime was committed. The officer was 100% correct. The officer called his dad the Chief of Police and in turn the chief called Mayor Chuck Lansdell. Melinda Malone called Councilwomen Patricia Mason and she showed up to city hall and confronted the mayor.

The unelected Councilwomen Mason was demanding a report and wanted to know who authorized this action. The mayor informed Councilwomen Mason that Alabama law gave him full authority to run the day to day operations of the town and no council vote can override Alabama law. Councilwoman Mason and the town clerk were informed that if they changed the locks he would invoke his rights under Alabama law and have them changed back.

No Common Sense Needed To Apply

It would seem that a person who is educated on the laws of Alabama and has experience in enforcing Alabama laws would understand them better. Cherokee Town Councilman Steve Glover, a law enforcement officer in Lawrence County, was fit to be tied Monday morning after finding out about the town clerk’s office locks being changed. Councilman Glover called the Cherokee Police Dept. and demanded a burglary report be filled out and gave orders to have the mayor arrested for burglary. The police dept. refused the request. It would seem that a person that enforces burglary laws would know more about them.

Section 13A-7-5

Burglary in the first degree.

(a) A person commits the crime of burglary in the first degree if he or she knowingly and unlawfully enters or remains unlawfully in a dwelling with intent to commit a crime therein, and, if, in effecting entry or while in dwelling or in immediate flight there from, the person or another participant in the crime:

(1) Is armed with explosives; or

(2) Causes physical injury to any person who is not a participant in the crime; or

(3) In effecting entry, is armed with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument or, while in the dwelling or immediate flight from the dwelling, uses or threatens the immediate use of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument against another person. The use of or threatened use of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument does not include the mere acquisition of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument during the burglary.

(b) Burglary in the first degree is a Class A felony.

(Acts 1977, No. 607, p. 812, §2610; Acts 1979, No. 79-471, p. 862, §1; Act 2006-198, p. 286, §1.)

Section 13A-7-7

Burglary in the third degree.

(a) A person commits the crime of burglary in the third degree if he knowingly enters or remains unlawfully in a building with intent to commit a crime therein.

(b) Burglary in the third degree is a Class C felony.

(Acts 1977, No. 607, p. 812, §2612; Acts 1979, No. 79-471, p. 862, §1.)

The mayor had no intent to commit a crime and he has the right under Alabama law to be on city property. How Councilman Steve Glover keeps a job in law enforcement puzzles me. It should puzzle the Sheriff of Lawrence County.

The Colbert County Sheriff’s Dept. filled out a report on the no crime committed incident. With Labor Day approaching the Colbert County Sheriff’s Dept is back in the Click-it or Ticket program. The sheriff’s election in Colbert County must be over.

Leighton Police Commissioner Arrested

Teresa Lannaman is a member of the Leighton Town Council and the Police Commissioner of that fair Colbert County town. The 49 year-old convenience store owner is currently serving her third term as Place 1 representative--she may soon be serving a different kind of term.

A 1981 graduate of Muscle Shoals High School, Lannaman was arrested on harassment charges early Thursday morning and was reportedly bonded out of Colbert County Jail by her husband, Jamaican native Russell (the Love Muscle) Lannaman. How important is her arrest to the Shoals political scene?

The answer to that question is: It depends. A source close to Leighton poltitics has informed us that the ABI, previously called in to investigate Mayor LaWayne Harrison, is currently working with the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate several complaints against both the mayor and other city officials. In other words, if you've ever wanted to serve on the Leighton Town Council, now may be the time to throw your chapeau into the slightly tarnished ring.

The license revocation hearing for Brian Keith McGuire has again been continued. The issues in this particular case against McGuire are now over eight years old. Let's hope the Alabama Department of Education charges against McGuire can be officially settled before the end of the year.
