Asking Bernie Delinski...

Bernie Delinski is a very good writer. He could do much better than the TimesDaily, but we assume he likes living in this area and the job security the TotallyDecatur provides. If we have one complaint about Bernie, it's something we've mentioned before: He fails to dig!

Many local stories don't require any investigative reporting, but surely a quickie real estate deal involving the City of Florence and the Lauderdale County Commission would fall into the bad smell category. What Bernie should have asked and reported in his recent article on the proposed ECM land sale:

1. How long has this land been up for sale?

2. How much interest has the possible land sale produced from would-be buyers?

3. Did Joel Anderson Jr. initiate the sale?

4. How was the sum of $300,000.00 arrived at?

5. Why was this land not placed up for bids?

6. Did current Mayor Andy Betterton enter into discussions about the sale before he was duly elected?

Perhaps these questions can be asked by Our Voice Shoals. This is a relatively new organization, but it seems intent on keeping Florence/Lauderdale politics honest.

Bernie Delinski Does Indeed Have a Fan Page!

Some months ago a Facebook wag questioned, "Bernie Delinski has a fan page?" Indeed he does, and we think he's well deserving of one, if for no other reason than his annual commencement address and his putting up with the editors/publishers of the Totally Decatur. If you enjoy Bernie, we encourage you to become a fan:

For those who grow more and more disappointed with our daily rag, there's still:

Recently we've had a large number of inquiries concerning two individuals with high profile arrests in Franklin County. We have been informed today that the grand jury will meet next week, but the list of cases to be presented was not available. We will continue to call and to report in the days to come.

Obviously the charges against Jeremy Shane Hall should be of great interest to everyone. There has been a civil suit already filed against the former Russellville police sergeant. If not indicted or convicted of state charges, Hall could conceivably face Federal charges.

Wash Your Mouth Out Or...

...killing two vivisectionists with one stone.

Certain words have always been unacceptable in polite society. We have it on good authority that they still are; it's just that less and less of society is polite these days.

Does anyone care? It seems some sites do have language filters, and that brings us to the TimesDaily forum. One can't post the word "fag" as a colloquialism for a cigarette. In fact, one can't even post the word Glucophage, since that's so obviously a way to call someone a homosexual. I trust you're following the TimesDaily's reasoning, since we aren't. What you can say is p*ssed off, or t**d, or several similar words that don't convey a strong anathema or social condemnation.

Are filters even the answer to this problem, or is it even a problem? We're not going to attempt to answer that question since our blog today is not about vulgarities, but the misuse and misspelling or common words--even if it took us two paragraphs to get there. There is logic to this approach; if the average person will strive to use words correctly, perhaps he or she will not feel the need to curse in order to express themselves. Let's look at some horrible and very public gaffes.

The Praisin' Cajun - We've all seen his online ads, but would you buy a car from someone who thinks "y'all" is spelled "ya'll?"

Bernie Delinski - This TimesDaily staffer once admitted he'd never heard the work "fob" and today suggested that inmate "trustees" perform work at the old Tuscumbia Post Office. We're pretty sure once they've been convicted, they're no longer trustees of any organization. Could Bernie have meant "trusties?"

Billy Jackson - Yes, we do think he will make a fantastic Lauderdale Circuit Court Judge, but we're also pretty sure he's not an "alumni" of UNA as his website informs us. Mr. Jackson is an "alumnus."

Now, for that second vivisectionist... OB's Corner recently featured a blurb for handmade specialty soaps. If you've never used any of these luxurious highly-scented soaps, you've been missing a real treat. Patricia Daniel sells her Daniel Tradition soaps at First Fridays in downtown Florence.

If you can't wait until the next First Friday, K's Cove in Elgin has a large selection of handmade soaps in a variety of fragrances, plus other handmade gifts and a huge selection of used paperbacks.

Between Patricia and K, we should have enough soap for the political name-calling season.

We may have to apologize to Quinton Hanson for stating he hasn't taken a real stand on any issues. We see where he recently Tweeted about the security dangers of the office copy machine. Well, we didn't say it was a logical stand.

Bill Batson, Trevor Stokes, and Who's on Second?

Bill Batson is the Chairman of the Lauderdale County Republican Party; Trevor Stokes is a reporter for the Florence TimesDaily. Either one, or both, of these gentlemen is very confused.

Yesterday, we published John Odem's announcement of his candidacy for Lauderdale District Judge--an office currently held by appointed Republican Carole Coil Medley (pictured). Also publishing Odem's announcement was the TimeDaily. In an article written by Stokes, the TD announced the names of three current District Judges, all of whom are actually serving as Lauderdale Circuit Judges.

Perhaps the most startling aspect of Stokes' article was the quote by Bill Batson that no Republican has yet announced his or her intention of running for District Judge. In fact, Ms. Medley announced on August 13, 2009, that she would be seeking four more years of the district judgeship, a fact recorded in the TD by Stokes'
fellow journalist Bernie Delinski.

And Lauderdale County often wonders why it's ignored in Montgomery?

What's up with this: Sources familiar with the now infamous Cherokee Council scuffle (dubbed Thrilla in the Kee by one local wag) are stating the Lansdell's son, known as Char-Char, will definitely be involved when all charges are finalized.
