Are you afraid to register to vote...afraid your batterer will find your address on the voter rolls? You don't have to be. Sheffield mayoral candidate Penny Freeman has provided some extremely interesting information to us:
I just learned something that I wish I’d known — and I bet I’m not the only one.
If you’re a victim of domestic violence, fleeing an abusive situation, OR living in a household with someone who is, you can fill out a simple form with the Alabama Secretary of State’s office to have your residential and mailing address removed from the public voter list.
That means you don’t have to give up your right to vote out of fear for your safety.
Unfortunately, I only just found out about this, so it may not apply in time for the upcoming election, but it’s too important not to share. Everyone deserves to have their voice heard without risking their safety.
Here’s the form: https://www.sos.alabama.gov/sites/default/files/voter-pdfs/Domestic_Violence_Affidavit.pdf
Please share — someone you know might need this.
