If you live or own property in Florence, you have probably just received a flyer from the "Florence Opportunity Forum." This mass mail-out presents a rosy picture of a new hotel to be built at 400 South Court Street in Florence. While the mailer is ostensibly from the forum, there is obviously someone behind this name.
We find the property is owned by a company called "400 South Court Street LLC." This shell company is owned by Eugene R. Sak and represented, at least in 2020, by Florence attorney Andrew J. Spry.
The flyer makes several specious arguments. Among them:
1. The project offers "new job and career prospects for residents." Not to say there's no money is hotel management, but most of these jobs will pay minimum wage or close to it.
2. It will offer the city a "state of the art conference center." Possibly - right next door to the Community Crossroads Outreach where Florence Police have been forced to remove city benches and our own J. Redmon has reported witnessing public urination in the middle of the day.
3. The city's investment can be protected by "several different guarantors." Alas, the flyer failed to mention even one of these guarantors.
4. In its attention to detail, the flyer has seemingly reversed the webpage and Facebook page logos at the bottom left of the flyer. If this is the attention to detail we can expect from this group, we need to pass on this project.
Progress is good; foolhardiness is not.
If there was ever a time for the citizens of Florence to take alarm at what is being done TO this city by those who are currently on the city council: it is NOW! The logo thing was cute but that is a drop in the bucket to the MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars this current crew is wasteing on vanity projects and some projects which smack of cronism and kickbacks so badly that it is obvious even to a layman to see the accounting shell games being played. I have been wondering for years why the meetings are no longer televised on Comcast live. Even the line up still shows a time slot on the community channel 3. I think now I know. The current regime wants to keep the public in the dark. Thanks to the great effort of Mr. David Carson, the work session: the "real meeting before the meeting" is being posted on facebook under the group name "Florence Patriots". I highly recommend everyone watch and thank him for his efforts. You may not, as I do not, agree with most of his political views but I do appreciate his efforts to keep the public informed about how their taxpayer money is spent. We really NEED to see just how this sausage is made! It is time that ALL citizens; if they cannot make it to the meetings in person, make it a point to check out not only the work session but the meeting itself. The meeting is part of the City of Florence FB page. It is confusing to get to, you need to like the page, then subscribe, then check notifications, but that is the purpose evidently. Don't be intimidated! Remembering the great Florentine: ELIZABETH ROMINE who went to jail for her right to state her views to the Florence city council...Rest in Peace. We need 40,000 Florence citizens with her courage to get this city back to being SERVED by elected officials not the other way around.
