Where Will You Meet Your Waterloo?

Waterloo - to most it's where the British put paid to ol' Boney. If you're local, it might mean something else.

We recently asked for information concerning supposed infractions at the western Lauderdale County school. We mainly received rude comments from those who felt the football coaches could do no wrong. Hasn't Muscle Shoals taught us anything?

Actually, it's probably taught us that the AHSAA doesn't care that much about what actually happens unless a large number of the public becomes aware of it. Let's look at some interesting facts about this year's team.

First, here are the AHSAA rules about practice drills, eligibility, etc. Yes, we said practice, but a rule is a rule:

Now here's a photo of a Waterloo practice from August 7th (documented on the Fox Sports Radio Facebook page). The young African-American man standing in the middle is Junior Summerhill. He was enrolled at Central until at least August 8th and was not enrolled at Waterloo as of August 10th:

There's more...and, of course, we're sure that Waterloo coaches have legitimate reasons for their shoddy record keeping. We await...

One thing that struck us when looking over some of the comments concerning Waterloo High School - all the comments concerned how good the football team is. None of them mentioned keeping the school open in order to facilitate community learning.

This is Alabama. Alabama is where erudition is considered a communicable disease to be avoided at all costs.

To succeed in life, you don't have to know everything. You just have to want to know everything.

  1. I'm a former student of waterloo high school and I do need to point out at least one glaring flaw with this entire post. The student you have identified as Junior Summerhill graduated with the class of 2017. I recommend if you feel like attacking an entire school you should do a little research. Furthermore, while football is a large part of Waterloo we also focus very heavily on the community and teaching students. There are so many organizations at the school that serve to better the community BETA,peers,FCA, student council etc. They just aren't mentioned as much because they don't get together under spotlights every Friday night. Student learning is also very important. There are several Waterloo students I know personally attending several universities with full ride scholorships. Waterloo is a close knit community and whatever your vendetta is agains it I recommend you let it go. There are too many people working too hard to keep it the wonderful place that it is.

    1. So you're saying Fox Radio Sports used an old photo so its reporter wouldn't have to do his/her job? Our "vendetta" is that we've been contacted by someone who lives in the area and is upset over the illegal recruiting.

  2. WOW.. Hilarious. If you can read I did say how good the school and staff were in my last comment. And I can tell you that the staff/ coaches go by the book when it comes to rules, unlike tsome other schools we don’t have to do “special” favors and illegal “recruitment “ . My thing that is concerning me is the fact that you seem to be in shock that there are people of color at Waterloo. Yes contrary to some uneducated belief there are students in school at Waterloo that are not of the Caucasian skin tone and they have chosen to be there without bribes and promises. So let’s give you another subject to talk about unless this is someone from central .... Can Central coaches give a answer why they have lost over 10 players recently? Good kids with lots of talent leaving their senior year? But those good kids mostly stand on the sideline with no playing time unless you’ve got the right last name or enough money to persuade a different decision. Yes we have gained new students from different places these past few years but not because of recruitment or anything illegal.

    1. Lets see...what you're saying is that if you need to identify X in a photo of six to eight similar people and X is the only black, you should still find a different way to identify him?

    2. That too especially since you clearly know his name? And you again slandered his name and are trying to discredit him with lies and he is a MINOR! I know very well you have not gotten any sort of permission from parents now have you... NO

    3. For any comment to be slander or libel, it must first be untrue.

  5. Isn't it interesting that if you point out something illegal in an organization, you automatically have a vendetta against them? If this is what is taught in schools today, then we see why there's so much gang violence.

  6. You need to read those notes under that rule. Note 3: A student who has already been enrolled in A school is not effected by this rule. Now it says A school and not THE school, and you claim the picture was taken on the 7th but the student was enrolled at Central until the 8th. Ok is it maybe possible that he was took out of Central on the 7th, then enrolled into Waterloo that day but wasn't counted there because it was after lunch before the enrollment process was finished? I know how long and enrollment process can take going from 1 school to another, records have to be gotten from the first school, there are papers to fill out before leaving the old school. When you get to the new school there is also more papers to fill out, selecting classes, and printing the schedule. Now correct me if I am wrong but school don't start til 8 a.m., most parents don't do business with school officials til then, so it is very possible that the process extended til after lunch therefore showing said student would not be on any homeroom list for the simple fact said student is new and not in the system yet. Not to mention they also had to be set up in the new school mints program. To me all this sounds like an upset coach because he lost a few players, I almost bet that if you looked up each and every addresses of said students you might find they all live in the Waterloo district. I do not know who you are but you are shaking a bee nest full of angry bees. Waterloo is and will always be a close tight and strong community. We stand behind our school and will defend it against any attacks like this, whether it be about a sports program or the educational program. All of the faculty at Waterloo do an outstanding job at educating our kids or we wouldn't keep enrolling our kids there. I will pray that you stop this parade to destroy something that a community of good people have fought so hard to keep going. If you think the parents of this school is just going to let you do this your wrong, just ask the retired principles how serious we take things like this involving our school. So please just stop and think about what your accusations can do to people's lives. Do you honestly want to cause someone to lose a job, or force a student to go back to a school they do not want to attend? What would you do if said students was your child and someone was posting these lies about them? Oh and another thing, do not play a racial cars it really shows your ignorance.

    1. How is identifying a person by race playing the race card? He was the only black person in the photo of six or so, making race the easiest way to ID him.

    2. Ok sweetie pie you do know this is 2018.... there are many apps that make it very easy even for the”slower “ people to edit or circle or place a check mark near or on a certain part of a photo, further more he is the only one standing up and in the middle of the photo.. so yes the only “black” is not the correct term to be used. .. . And yes it is untrue unless you actually have proof.. So put up or shut up short stuff 😁😉

    3. Definition of a liberal: 99 white guys in a photo and one black guy and the liberal identifies the black guy as the one wearing a puce shirt. In other words, we used the easiest identification possible so that the most readers would see young Mr. Summerhill. Would you have felt the same way if there had been one white and six blacks?

  7. Goodness, there are kids in every county school that don’t live in the district, but I guess they have money to keep it quiet! Let him go to Waterloo if he wants! Since when does one kid make a ball team? I guess it’s just Waterloo’s time to shine and others are jealous! And as far as race goes...shame on y’all! I went to Waterloo and we had several black families to go there, we aren’t racist. We treated everyone the same! Ask them!

    2. We don't have a way to edit these comments, and that's probably for the good since we can't be accused of changing meaning. You used a vulgarity for urination that we do not allow in comments here or on FB.

  10. I know the school follows eligibility rules. My daughter teansferd there this year. She was informmed upon enrollment that she would have to sur the required year before she qould be able to pkay.I hear no uproar about the players that transfered to other schools in the western end of the county. Mabet yall ought to check why so many athletes are leaving Central. You"ll find it isn't "ILLEGAL RECRUITMENT ",but a desire to simply be in a better school.

  11. Let me start off with saying I went to Central my whole life. Played football all-state and everything else. Die hard Central fan until it started getting bad for my kids at Central. Now Central has some of the best teachers, nothing against them. But with my kids playing sports it was always a joke. I called the coaches won’t answer, called the school to have coaches calls back still won’t. Kids practice supposed to be over at four when you get there they tell you 5:30 then 6 so on. Don’t know if it’s a buddy system or money thing but the kids are not treated equally. So my kids begged to transfer to Waterloo few months later I gave. My kids had to set out the rest of the year in sports. But they where much happier made better grades better attitudes. So instead of trying to found something on Waterloo, start looking into Central to found out why the transfer rate is so high. Start talking with the students at Central to found out why some many of them wanting to leave Central. So instead of trying to hold Waterloo back try to make Central better for all the other kids wanting to leave but can’t, the other kids that hate to wake up in the morning to go to Central.

  12. Now that Fox Shoals has cleared up the misinformation you were fed move on. If your actually wanting a story then do some digging elsewhere. The players that are remaining at Central need a voice also. So if you are really out to help then help them. Waterloo is in the clear and if someone else has something to say well bring it on. Jealously is all the reason this was started in the first place. Basketball and Football coaching has been a joke for a good while at Central. Yes there are good people there so don’t twist my words. But if you want a program to improve for the children’s sake then by all means investigate that.
