The Midnight Rider on Katie Logan

Katie Logan makes a good First impression

I would like to start out this article by saying; we have never met Katie Logan.  We know who she is via Facebook and her Husband, Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan.  With that being said, we did support her here on this website during Election Time.  It appears that our support was well founded.
From the Times Daily Newspaper:
TUSCUMBIA -- City Councilwoman Katie Logan used Monday's council meeting as an opportunity to issue a 30-day challenge that she hopes will launch a permanent movement.
The District 1 councilwoman announced the Tuscumbia 30 challenge, which asks residents to spend their tax dollars exclusively in Tuscumbia businesses for 30 days, beginning March 1.
"This is a push to challenge your neighbors, challenge your community, to spend in Tuscumbia," Logan said. "It's a low-cost way to get our citizens to invest in Tuscumbia."
She said shopping only in Tuscumbia is a realistic goal, and backed that comment by listing numerous examples of merchandise, ranging from grocery to retail to vehicles, that are available from businesses in the city.
"You'll find we have everything you need," Logan said.
She said the Tuscumbia 30 effort will have a strong social media presence throughout March to push word of mouth. Fliers also will be abundant throughout town.
Tuscumbia 30 also will sponsor businesses by posting information about them on social media throughout the month, Logan said.
"It may be a business you didn't know about," she said. "This campaign will involve a big social media push."
The project has a long-term goal of bringing residents into the habit of continuing to looking within the city first for purchases after the 30-day period, Logan said.
The idea brought accolades from the crowd at the meeting, as well as from Logan's fellow council members.
"One thing I like about it, from a business owner's perspective, is this is no cost to the business at all," Councilman William Foster said.
Mayor Kerry Underwood encouraged residents and merchants to keep the effort alive over social media so it stays on the public's minds. He said the council supports its retail base throughout the city and Logan's idea is evidence of that.
"We believe Tuscumbia 30 is a good start," Underwood said. "I'm happy she thought about it and we need to keep it going."
Mrs. Logan has come up with a simple plan to help bring tax dollars into the City of Tuscumbia.  It is a simplistic approach to an old problem.  Will it work?  Who knows?  However, this young lady has had the “intestinal fortitude” to stand up and issue this Challenge.  She has only been in Office for a short period of time and she has already made the newspaper with a news worthy item.

Tuscumbia is a small town and it needs all the tax dollars in can generate.  Having a Challenge to spend your tax dollars there during a 30 day period is a good way for the City to determine how much actual money can and could be brought into the City.  I have heard several people say that “all of downtown Tuscumbia is nothing but Antiques and Clothing Stores.”  That may be.  However, it is going to take things such as this 30 Day Challenge for Business Owners to realize the value of being in Tuscumbia.

Many of the local Cities don’t realize the potential of people that live there, if these people spent their money in another town.  People who go to other Cities to have dinner for example, that is tax money leaving the original city.  While we don’t live in the City Limits but in the County, we usually have to go to the different Cities to get items.
We would like to say that we are impressed with Katie Logan so far in her Term as Council Lady for the City of Tuscumbia.  Keep up the good work.
P.S.  We heard that there is a business in Sheffield that will be relocating to Tuscumbia.   That will be a big loss for Sheffield and a Feather in the Cap of Tuscumbia.  More on that as it becomes available.

Lottery/Readers' Voices/Katie Logan

An Alabama lottery? It's amazing that those who tout the lottery for education will now revile it if the funds are used to help sick children. No, we've not endorsing the lottery, we're simply making an observation. We would love to hear from anyone who can rationalize that line of thinking.

From Readers:

* It's amusing that some of Rogersville's LEOs allegedly 'support' Haygood for mayor....especially since Haygood has been overheard in public stating that he didn't 'see a need' for Rogersville having a police department in the first place. Are residents of Rogersville willing to do without a police department? If Haygood is elected mayor they may very well have to.

* Richard Herston's double talk reminded me of what a wise man once told me. I asked him if a certain politician was a liar and he replied: Well, I wouldn't say he was a liar, but he's a politician, and all politician's lie.

* Rogersville DOESN'T HAVE a 'police commissioner'. They have a Chief or Police, Terry Holden....and TWO full-time officers. TWO. (Editor's note: While there is no titled job "Police Commissioner," the police department reports to Haygood in his current position of council member.)

* Yes, I have reported Jerry Don Crowden having a cell phone or something to access the net while in Holman prison. This is one of his latest posts: People need to get a life and. Please please let me have some tranquillity because if you cause any one in my circle any trouble you are going to wish like hell this snake would have bitten you. (Editor's note: To Jerry Don, those who have reported your cell phone usage very probably have a life and one of their mottoes is "If you see something illegal, say something." BTW, we believe you just committed the crime of Witness Intimidation.)

We've asked for platforms and have received several. Today we're publishing Katie Logan's. Katie is running for the Tuscumbia City Council.

I want to reemphasize my platform so readers who missed the first post can see it. First of all, I am a proud resident of District 1. I am also a proud business owner in downtown Tuscumbia, Basse Trading Company. I am a graduate of the University of North Alabama. I have over ten years experience in retail. I currently manage Austin's Shoes, and have done so for eight years. I have a tremendous understanding of what retail tax base can do for a city.

Prior to my position at Austin's Shoes as manager, I was employed with the Lawrence County Industrial Development Board in Moulton, Alabama. Here I developed the skills and knowledge to showcase perspective businesses with all an area has to offer. I want to bring this same mindset to Tuscumbia to increase the tax base so we can in turn help the city grow. I know I only represent District 1, but my major goal is to work with the Mayor and council, as well as all city employees and departments, to make Tuscumbia is a business friendly city.

We have a rich history with Ivy Green, Deshler football, Spring Park and so many other treasures. We have a beautiful downtown, as well as a wonderful quality of life great schools and low crime. If given the opportunity to serve District 1 and the citizens of Tuscumbia, I will work every single day to make Tuscumbia a better place to work, live and raise a family.

Tuscumbia Municipal Elections/Katie Logan

From the Midnight Rider:

We are continuing our series of City/Town Elections. We had made the comment recently that the City of Sheffield may be the powder keg of the elections. We may have been wrong about that. Driving around the City of Sheffield, we have only seen Signs for Penny Freeman. Miss Freeman is running for District 4 for the City of Sheffield. We will be doing an article on her that will be posted soon.

Recently we spoke to two employees of the City of Tuscumbia. Both were excited about the upcoming elections. They were hoping for some change to come to that City Government. As we drive through the City of Tuscumbia, we see a lot of signs up. Most are for Cole and Underwood for Mayor. We have never met either one of the candidates. Mr. Cole is retired from the City of Tuscumbia Fire Department and Mr. Underwood is an Accountant.

Checking on Facebook, Mr. Underwood has a page for his election campaign. It appears that he started campaigning some time ago. I guess getting a jump on the competition.

The first thing listed on his webpage is his platform for the election:

-Support the school system
-Expand Tuscumbia’s boundaries
-Secure new sources of revenue
-Enforce our ordinances to keep Tuscumbia “tourist ready”
-Establish a Small Business Advisory Board
-Begin Town Hall meetings
-Establish a Park & Recreation board
-Begin a new and yet undefined advertising campaign for the city
-Establish departmental oversight and management through the mayor’s office
-Begin the process of paving and repairing the city streets

The above is a well thought out platform. We are interested to see or read how each goal is to be accomplished. We are sure there will be questions asked about each aspect by the citizens of Tuscumbia. They look like good ideas to us.

We checked Facebook for David Cole’s page. He has one there that appears to be personal. Mr. Underwood has one especially for the Election. We looked through Mr. Cole’s page to check his platform. We had to scroll through the page before I found a picture of a door tag with his election info on it. Mr. Cole, as much as some of us do not like Social Media, today’s Society uses it for everything. Build upon your page.

Again, we do not know either candidate so at this point, we are not endorsing either. Do your homework. This will be your chance to get your voice heard. Remember to come out and vote.

Katie Logan For District 1 Election

We had planned on writing the above article and had been making notes. One day, we saw a Katie Logan Election Sign. She is running for District 1 City Council for the City of Tuscumbia. Let me lay this out there. We have never met Mrs. Logan. All we know about her is she is married to Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan. We read that she recently opened a business in Tuscumbia.

As we continued on driving, we started thinking about her running for a place in the City. She owns a business in the City of Tuscumbia. She is young so she would bring young views to the table per say. Contrary to popular belief, young people do vote. She knows how the City of Tuscumbia operates by being married to Chief Logan.

I could see her opponents saying that she would have a conflict of interest. I disagree with that. If she votes on a subject that has to do with the Police Department, there are several other members of the City Council that can overrule or vote against her. She can always recuse herself from the vote. To me, that sounds like the Checks and Balance System that this great Country was founded on. So with that being said, “You go girl.” We think a fresh, young view could help the City.

Until next time,
I am and always will be, the Midnight Rider...

From L. Stone:

Great quote from Tom Gresham - I saw a movie where only the police and military had guns. It was called "Schindler's List."

Both L. Stone and J. Redmon have sent us some salient info on the latest gun controversy. We'll have both up early next week. Plus, we have a guest blog on the Deshler High Bella Club and a great new article for Shoals Crime also scheduled. Remember, we always welcome guest blogs and comments.
