A reader has commented on another reader's comment. She wanted us to know that Jackie Hendrix wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. What does that mean exactly?
Here's one take:
The phrase "born with a silver spoon in your mouth" is a common idiom used to describe someone who is born into a wealthy or privileged family. It is often used to suggest that such a person has had an easy life and has never had to worry about money or other financial concerns.
There are a number of different interpretations of what it means to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Some people believe that it simply means that a person has been born into a wealthy family and has never had to worry about money. Others believe that it means that a person has been given a number of advantages in life, such as a good education and connections to influential people.
The term "born with a silver spoon in your mouth" is often used in a negative way. Some people believe that it is unfair that some people are born into wealthy families and have all the advantages that come with it, while others have to struggle to make ends meet. However, it is important to remember that everyone has their own unique set of challenges and advantages in life. Just because someone is born into a wealthy family does not mean that they have not had to overcome any difficulties.
We're not sure that anyone currently on the council has been born with the proverbial silver spoon as we have always understood it. If you use the definition of having enough and being provided a good education, then all would probably qualify...even Jackie Hendrix...and Shoalanda.
That doesn't mean that any on the council can seriously identify with those who currently live "hand to mouth." Yet, that is not our criticism of most. Our criticism of council members is always expanding and never taking care of the infrastructure currently in place.
Speaking of Hendrix specifically, we can mention sidewalks downtown - please have them repaired. The WVNA sign - make the owner maintain it or tear it down.
And Eubanks? Fight for a fire station in your district; you know it's needed.
Simmons? It's no fun, but make North Florence and West Florence businesses clean up their act. Both mini-downtowns have some very fixable problems.
To all? Stop spending money the City doesn't have.
