Veterans Park sits virtually unattended, as it has for years. No one knows where to do improvements since no one knows where the promised attraction will be. Perhaps most importantly, no one knows what these unknown improvements will cost.
Is there an answer, other than quickly finding that elusive attraction? Perhaps redoing the contract that calls for the attraction since apparently it's not needed. Also, it would seem no one knew the attraction couldn't be commercial in nature when the city entered into the contract, and that could be a factor in revamping the agreement.
Veterans and the citizens of Florence deserve better.

Supporters of Jacob Modas were out in force, as these kind of people usually are when a totally innocent thug is arrested. One even suggested the elderly female victim deserved it. And we wonder why the jails are full.
Two comments about our blog stand out - one sad and one hilarious. The sad one?

We had two very interesting online encounters with teenage girls today. One wanted us to embarrass her mother (why she thought this was in our repertoire, we don't know), and the second informed us because her late friend was joking in her social media bio and we repeated her comment as truth, we were lying...as we always did. Did any of that last statement make sense to anyone with either an age or IQ over 18?
We've said this before, but it bears repeating: Whatever you have posted on FB will remain after your death. Oh, sure, you're not planning on dying anytime soon, but you have to admit that it is a possibility. You may be the most moral person in the world, but those who read your online bio 20 years down the road and see that you listed your occupation as "whore" or "numbers runner" just might believe that about you. Is that how you want to be remembered?

Jacob D. Modas? The 21 year-old's booking entry from 7/25 may read alias/bench warrant, but according to AlaCourt, that's not the case. These records confirm:
* Jacob Modas was arrested July 25 on two counts of 3rd degree assault in relation to this case.
* The case was investigated by the Rogersville Police Department and Modas was arrested by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office (who may have helped in the investigation).
* The case is being heard in Lauderdale County District Court.
If any other charges are later added, we will post the information. The current charges are misdemeanors.

"The park is the pits." David Bradley on Veterans Park. Ah, at last a council member who tells it like it is.
While we have been led to expect an arrest in a recent Rogersville assault, the above arrest doesn't appear to be it...exactly. The photo sent us was taken from the Hard Times and doesn't provide an adequate description.
For those who may not know, approximately 10 days ago an elderly Rogersville woman and her son, a local businessman, were brutally attacked in the parking lot of the shopping plaza where Fred's Department Store is located. Also located in the same center is a business where Jacob Modas works (or worked). Witnesses have identified him as the attacker.
The description in the Hard Times lists "alias," meaning usually that one needs to pay a fine or go to jail. It also lists "bench warrant," which as we understand it is an expression for capias warrant, meaning one needs to actually appear before a judge for some reason. We are not told what type of court issued these warrants. Municipal, district, or circuit?
We should know more when this arrest appears online. As we understand it, the investigation was being handled by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's office and not the Rogersville police. An arrest for the third degree assault might take up to three weeks; it being a misdemeanor*, the case should be heard in district court.
* We've seen some reports that the pair was assaulted with a blackjack. If true, this might qualify for second degree assault, a felony, and the case sent to circuit court.

We've received criticism in some circles for not blogging on this incident before. Even though a name was provided, until an actual arrest was made for some cause, we could not ethically use it here.
