Is It a New Jail or a Sex Offender Resort?

A recent blog concerning Colbert County Commissioner Charles Hovater refusing to support the county's animal shelter has garnered a pithy comment concerning the good commissioner:

The Tuscumbia Camp William A. Johnston #898 respectfully asked Mr. Hovater if we could place a military monument on the court house lawn with other military monuments, he assured us there would be no problem with it. When we arrived he and his fellow members turned against us and used 48 News as their way of twisting this into their way of being re-elected. Now ask them what is coming on Woodward Avenue very soon?

This raises two points. First, no matter how anyone feels about the proposed monument, if Hovater lied to the Sons of Confederate Veterans about the acceptance of the monument, he needs to face severe censure. We would love to hear more about Hovater's role in any miscommunication concerning the monument.

Second, what is coming to Woodward Avenue? Is it the new jail? Or could it be the once defeated sex offender halfway house?

Colbert County, do you know what your commissioners are doing?

Lights Out on O'Neal Bridge?/Charles Hovater

Readers are reporting that the lights on the north end of O'Neal Bridge are again unlit. This is Florence's responsibility. When this was a problem previously, numerous complaints resulted in quick repair/policy change. Yes. it is a safety issue. If Florence can illegally give money to a cult, it can fix the lights on the bridge.

If you rent, did you know that your landlord can't have your utilities shut off unless there is a serious building code violation? If you've had that problem, contact us. If you need to know your rights, here's a great guide:

Prince has started his new "Bite List" and has placed Colbert County Commissioner Charles Hovater at the top. Hovater obviously has no sense of the shelter funding problem. Actually, Hovater has no sense whatsoever. More to follow...

We recently mentioned four Colbert County towns and their appropriations. We included Leighton which has taken it upon itself to establish its own animal control laws. The town either needs to rescind these laws or kick in the electric meter funding that Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, and Sheffield do. More on this later also...

Jeff Barksdale More Qualified? We Doubt It...

 Anita Morgan Scott

Does Red Bay attorney Jeff Barksdale know more about the circuit court clerk's office than Franklin County Clerk Anita Scott? Hmmmm. He tells us he's more qualified. We would certainly agree he's more qualified to set up a family trust or defend a murder suspect. We doubt that Barksdale predicted he would desire the office of Franklin County Circuit Court Clerk when he set up law practice in 2008.

It's a sad fact, but Red Bay attorneys don't make a Los Angeles salary. It's probably very safe to say Mr. Barksdale's salary varies from month to month--not that good a thing for someone attempting to support a young family.

However, we're going with Mrs. Scott's thirty years of courthouse experience and endorsing her for the Democratic nomination. Her photograph doesn't depict her as being quite as close to death's door as Barksdale has insinuated, and her experience seems a much more prudent bet than a nebulous statement about bringing in some unidentified new electronic equipment. We weren't aware Franklin County had the money in its budget to purchase a new wastebasket.

Finishing off Colbert County, Jimmie Gardiner is our choice for the Dem. in District 3. District 6 has generated a great deal of mail for each commission candidate, but neither has a dramatic edge over the other in any area. We suggest you thoroughly research David Isom and Charlie Hovater and then vote. Colbert County would do well with either one.

A reader has asked us if 11 years experience in the legal field really trumps four. Obviously, each case is different, but we would ask the reader which surgeon he would prefer to remove his gallbladder...

Colbert County District Six Heats Up

There may be four weeks before actual qualifying begins, but District Six in Colbert County is already awash with candidates. So far, three have indicated they will run as Democrats for the county commission

Charles (Charlie) Hovater is a graduate of Cherokee High School and currently works for the Sheffield Utility Department. Hovater's signs can be seen along Hwy 43 and other well traveled areas of the district.

David C. Isom ran an unsuccessful campaign four years ago, but the owner of C& I Crane in Tuscumbia is already handing out bumper stickers and magnetic car signs to his supporters.

Dale Presley is a Silver Grove, Kentucky, native who currently resides in Tuscumbia. Sources indicate Presley, a store manager in Cherokee, may make her official announcement as early as next week.

We'll bring you more on each of these candidates as the March primary draws closer. We do have to ask where are the Republicans? Surely in 2012, the staunchly Democratic county could muster just one to run for each seat?

After showcasing a Bag by TJ for sale on eBay, we had several inquiries concerning the company. We have no idea if the business is still in existence, but at least one reader has indicated they are no longer in the area. Here's another eBay find: Link
