1971: Lauderdale County was a Humiliation?

Recent events reminded one reader of a time when Lauderdale and Colbert Counties were less comrades than competitors. In fact, a former managing editor of the TimesDaily called holding a Muscle Shoals event in Lauderdale County a "humiliation."

Have times changed for the better? Until Colbert's actions concerning Florence's jewel-in-the-crown medical center, we would have said yes. Now? Not so much.

Still, this 52 year-old newspaper clipping is extremely telling. It's also sad. The hippies didn't even show up...

*****

We never visit the North Alabama Medical Center that we aren't reminded of how hard Greg Burdine fought for it. How was he repaid? After all, what average Lauderdale Countian would prefer a man of probity like Greg to a simpering high school graduate who stuffs his pockets with their tax dollars?

We live in a sad world...
