How Auburn Outmaneuvered Florence for the Land Grant College
Auburn Chosen Over Florence for Alabama's Land-Grant College in 1872 After Legislative Maneuvering
In a closely watched decision in February 1872, the Alabama State Legislature selected Auburn as the site for the state's new land-grant college, an institution mandated by the federal Morrill Act of 1862. This outcome followed a "lively debate" and ultimately saw a minority report of a legislative selection committee, which favored Auburn, adopted over a majority report that had reportedly considered Florence the "most viable option."
The Morrill Act entitled Alabama to 240,000 acres of federal land to establish a college focused on agriculture and the mechanic arts. Several locations vied for the new institution, with Florence in Lauderdale County and Auburn in Lee County emerging as the primary contenders.
Special committees were formed by the legislature in December 1871 to evaluate the proposals and recommend a location. While Florence was initially seen by some as the stronger candidate, Auburn's offer to donate the entire campus, including land and buildings, of the East Alabama Male College proved to be a decisive factor. This existing infrastructure, despite the college's financial difficulties, provided a tangible starting point for the new land-grant institution.
The political climate of the Reconstruction era also played a significant role. The Republican-controlled state legislature and governorship ultimately made the decision. On February 13, 1872, the legislature opted to support the minority committee report advocating for Auburn. The bill officially designating Auburn as the site for the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University) was passed on February 24, 1872.
While specific details of the majority and minority committee reports and the full scope of the legislative debates are not readily available in easily accessible public records today, historical accounts indicate that Auburn's tangible offer of existing facilities was a compelling argument. Key individuals like Sheldon Toomer, who had deep ties to Auburn as an alumnus, future faculty member, prominent businessman (founder of Toomer's Drugs and the Bank of Auburn), and eventual local and state politician, likely played a crucial role in advocating for Auburn's selection.
In contrast, while Florence had an existing institution in Florence Wesleyan University, the specific resources it could offer or commit to the land-grant college's particular focus on agricultural and mechanical education, as compared to Auburn's outright donation of its college campus, may have been perceived as less advantageous by the legislators who voted in favor of the minority report. The exact financial condition and suitability of Florence Wesleyan University for this new role, in the eyes of the decision-makers, versus the immediate availability of the East Alabama Male College campus, likely tipped the scales in Auburn's favor.
Thus, Florence lost the bid for Alabama's land-grant college due to a combination of Auburn's strategic donation of existing infrastructure, effective advocacy by its proponents, and the prevailing political dynamics within the Reconstruction-era Alabama Legislature that led to the adoption of the minority committee report.

Group of UNA Employees Feel "Sold Out"
The University of North Alabama has terminated all its custodial employees, opting to use a professional service instead. Current custodial employees, if they choose to remain with the private company, will lose the State benefits they've become accustomed to.
In fact, these employees say they'll now be working to pay the exorbitant insurance costs, with little left for anything else. We wonder how many faithful employees will actually transfer to the private company. Perhaps the university will soon regret its decision.

Will other departments soon see a similar move? The future of campus police may be surprising...

UNA Train Wreck Part I - Kitts
Kenneth Kitts, the president of the University of North Alabama and the man who attempted to steal Braly Stadium and the old Coffee High School property from the City of Florence, is not anyone for an honest person to emulate. Yet the university trustees fawn over the mop-top educator.
The trustees have often commented the prexy is such an asset that he requires various bonuses. Does the average person know how much Kitts makes in a year?
Let's look at 2024...
How many of our readers, no matter their degrees, make even close to $600K annually? Don't forget the Kitts family mansion, mortgage and property tax free. What is wrong with this picture?

Interestingly, the more money the City gives UNA, the more guarded and distant that institution becomes from the community.
Tomorrow: Hidden crime.

Florence to Give UNA Two Million on Stadium
The University of North Alabama has asked the four major Shoals cities for a donation over the next four years to help with construction of its new Bank Independent stadium.
Tuscumia said - No answer yet.
Muscle Shoals said - We'll think about it.
Sheffield said - We'll give you 10K.
Florence said - We'll give you two million.
Remember: This is the same university that tried to steal Braly Stadium. How much did Florence taxpayers have to hand over to defend that frivolous lawsuit?

UNA Did What with the Money?!!!
The Social and Woke University substantial fee increases are due in part to the real estate portfolio Kitts and his board are amassing.
Classes are routinely cancelled but the salaries keep growing with no accountability.

The UNA Rape Problem
We're sure there are as many opinions of the University of North Alabama as there are students. Here's a current essay from the Flor-Ala:
While the article is extremely interesting in itself, it's one of the comments that's especially telling. Over and over, we read of rape victims being treated this way.
Note that it's not some lower class goon who's telling the victim it's her fault. It's a part of the administration who should be supportive of the university's students.
The rape victims aren't getting even lip service. What is wrong with a large part of society, especially our university?

UNA Has a New Ligature
If you're like us, you are unfamiliar with the meaning of the word "ligature" in printing. It seems it indicates two or more letters joined together into one logo. It has been announced the University of North Alabama is rebranding in honor of joining Division I athletics. The ligature above is part of the package for which the university paid actual dollars.
We can see the tourists now: "Well, I'm either headed to the university for the ballgame or I'm on my way to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Hmmm, sign looks pretty cheap, so it must be UNA."
Look on the bright side. It makes F!rence look good...

ZAR Brings Us Important News from UNA
Hello Ms. S,
Another Thanksgiving has come and gone. I am very sorry that we were not able to get together this year. Between the tryptophan and mushroom gravy, I've been out of it all weekend.
You will be happy to know that my niece paid me a nice long visit. She still attends the University of North Alabama. I think she may be on the 'ten-year program'.
She said that on Thursday, December 2 members of the faculty will have a big meeting. The faculty senate will have its monthly meeting broadcast on Zoom. Do you know if that channel is on Comcast?
I almost died laughing while imagining all of those instructors calling each other senator (senator, senator, senator, senator). Talk about play-acting. Haha!
Word on campus is that Senator Makowski and Senator Owens-Murphy are both hot under the collar concerning the new conflict of interest and financial disclosure policy.
You may know Senator Makowski as being the chairperson of the Lauderdale County Cemetery Board. Did you know that when you die and are buried your remains become the property of the State of Alabama? That is why I am being cremated.
Of course, everyone knows Senator Owens-Murphy. She is the one that released a popular rap song a couple of years ago. Something about pasta not being able to save your soul. I am not sure of the actual title. The B-side was my favorite - no justice no pizza!
The student body at UNA keeps getting larger and larger. Kind of like myself after eating all this delicious Thanksgiving food.
So many students now attend classes virtually. What I want to know is why do they need professors on campus for online classes? Couldn't they use prerecorded clips?
My baby niece did say that Kitts has just about worried himself into a tizzy concerning the City of Florence being placed in a new legislative district. Supposedly it will change university funding. I guess he should have thought about that before things got so out of control.
I still miss my wild and crazy days at UNA. I think you were at some of those parties we use to have.
I can't believe they got Patterson Hood from the Drive-By Truckers to deliver the commencement speech during a recent graduation ceremony. I always thought his GPA and mine were about the same.
But unlike him, I'm not very woke. In fact, I rarely ever woke up in time for classes.
I hope to see you at the annual dirty Santa Christmas party. I will there with bells on!
You good bud, Zack A.R.

Theft at UNA?
You may have heard about the UNA police officer accused of committing felony theft by appropriating two generators from the campus. This made the news; we're guessing because the insurance company wouldn't reimburse the university unless charges were filed.
But what about the theft of things with more intellectual or sentimental value than monetary? We hear it's rampant at UNA, but usually no charges are filed. A teaching assistant steals an old book, an adjunct steals historical papers, even a professor steals a theater prop. Does UNA file charges?
In most cases, if the items are returned, the powers that be simply slap a wrist and ask the offender to behave better the next time. Is this fair to the taxpayers who fund the programs at UNA? We think not.
If you're aware of campus theft, report it to police. If you're uncomfortable with that, contact us, and we'll help you get to the right agency to get it sorted.
Remember: If you report the theft, you're not only helping UNA, you're bringing to light an unsavory element that has no place on the campus.

Is UNA Failing the Shoals Area?
Perhaps it's a case of a horse refusing to drink after being led to water. It would seem logical that the closer one lived to an institution of higher learning, the easier it would be to obtain a college degree. Apparently that's not true for all.
According to the latest statistics available (2019), just over 25% of adults in Alabama have at least a four-year degree. For the purposes of the study, an adult is defined as anyone 25 and over. Florence has, if one counts Heritage Christian University, two institutions offering bachelor's and master's degrees. Wouldn't it follow that Lauderdale County would have a higher than average educational attainment?
Sorry. Lauderdale has a rate of 24.5%, or almost one percent less than the state average. Colbert has 18.1%, and Franklin trails at 14%.
We know many who work in what's commonly called a trade who have college degrees. A university degree has been the "new high school diploma" for decades now. Is UNA failing? Are our high schools failing?
Look at bright side: At least Alabama has a real winner where it counts - Nick Saban and Alabama football...

Teaching Protesting at UNA?
From a faithful reader:
The University of North Alabama expansion in Tuscumbia may soon be ready to use. The new location will host meetings and events. It will also feature office, gallery, and classroom spaces. The Alabama Center for the Arts in downtown Decatur is a collaborative effort between Calhoun Community College and Athens State University. Governor Ivey recently awarded them $15M for a residence hall to be built.
UNA and NWSCC could find their niche if they would work together. Both schools should form an agreement with the Lauderdale County Ag Authority. The LCAA should make education their #1 priority.
In our area, the only way we can advance is for everyone to work together. Every city, agency, and entity - including UNA and NWSCC -should be audited by an outside source.
No matter your feelings about Donald Trump every person understands the concept of the swamp i.e. draining the swamp. Well Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers. Mitch McConnell was born in Sheffield. The Senator McConnell grew up in Athens.
At this very moment it seems almost every official in Limestone County is either under indictment or investigation. What if our local political cesspools were drained? What would be left? A solid foundation.
UNA should use the new space for political science courses. Students could also learn a lot by using it as a meeting hall. Just please don't tell me if their intention is to use the new space as a place to teach how to protest. If so I have a phrase they can borrow: hey hey, ho ho, Kitts has got to go.

How Much Does UNA Care for Employees?
Guest Editorial:
Once again UNA has proven that the welfare of their employees are not high priority. Well, at least, SOME of their employees. All along, we have been told our target return date was May 26. Even as of last Thursday we were instructed that we would need to be planning on returning May 26 with restrictions such as staggering employee work times, etc. We were also told that any employee who didn’t feel comfortable returning could submit a letter for approval to continue working from home stating if they had circumstances that may put them or their family at greater risk.
Now as of 2:00 today we were informed...we would all be back at 7:30 am tomorrow morning! (So much for giving employees time to make arrangements) No phasing employees in, staggering or anything! If we choose not to come....we can use our vacation time!
Now when I say SOME of their employees are of more importance, they have blatantly informed us that “department chairs and administrative assistants” will be allowed to work from home until July 6. When questioned why we should risk exposure and they shouldn’t...Cindy Conlon was quick to inform us that “we shouldn’t worry about what others were doing.” I have attached copies of what we have been sent.

Personnel Problems at UNA - Part V
Again, I am going to ask. Is UNA Board of Trustees okay with this type of behavior from their top-ranking positions on campus. As I said earlier Alabama A&M Coach Maynor’s accusations right now are hear say. But these recordings are not. Their tone and context are not. Who is involved in these recordings are the decision/policy makers and enforcers of these decisions/policies for the University of North Alabama and that should set off alarms for everyone. Now what UNA will quickly say is David Shields and Clinton Carter are no longer at the University. And yes, that is true but neither was disciplined and/or terminated. There is even a Flor-Ala article where Vice President Ross Alexander praises David Shields for being such a great person. Them leaving does not solve the issues. Do not fall for that.
If you made phone calls concerning the Alabama A&M press conference you should be organizing protests over this audio recordings. Maybe I am the only one that has a HUGE problem with the context and tone of this recordings. I certainly pray I am NOT!
Notice this was not just one incident where someone could downplay and say this was random and not the norm. These are stretched out over years. I am told there are recordings dated in 2017. Yes, there are more from other VPs. I haven’t been given those yet but I will continue to ask.
Oh, I almost forgot. Here is the video mentioned in one of the above emails of Kevin Jacques’ staff removing student belongings out of two different residence halls and placing them in a car. According to the reports made by students the dollar amount of items taken amounted to felony theft and nothing was ever done. No investigation - no sanctions - no apologies to the students - nothing. But Ms. Mitchell was degraded - demeaned - embarrassed - salary reduced. When Ms. Mitchell asked the consultant why he was brought in he did not mention this theft or anything Kevin Jacques had done wrong. Only what Ms. Mitchell supposedly had done wrong. Happy watching, It’s good stuff.
I will end with this. I remember when Mr. Michael Eric Dyson came to UNA in February 2018. During his talk he said, I am paraphrasing, a black woman could have an incident recorded and they will still say it did not happen, it was not me. This is truly the case here. UNA responded to Ms. Mitchell’s lawsuit in a 2017 article in Times Daily by saying:
University spokesman Bryan Rachal said in an emailed statement the "university enforces policies and procedures to prevent illegal workplace discrimination. All decisions concerning Ms. Mitchell's employment have been based upon legitimate non-discriminatory factors. We regret she perceives otherwise and will not further comment at this time."
I said earlier take race out of this because when some people hear racism a wall goes up and they get a glazed look in their eyes. I wanted you read and listen to the recordings with an open mind so you could place yourself in the employee’s shoes. However, I believe that if Ms. Mitchell were white she would not have endured all that she was forced to endure. The common denominator in all of these recordings is Ms. Mitchell’s (a black female) presence and those who reported directly to her (Jimmy Waddell was hired by and reported to Ms. Mitchell). Ms. Mitchell made the mistake of standing up for herself and saying out loud enough is enough. When her white counterparts were caught lying and breaking the law NOTHING happened to them. That’s racial discrimination folks. That’s retaliation. That’s creating a hostile work environment. UNA does NOT really want to be diverse/equitable and embrace diversity/equality they just want to look like they are. All about perception and PRing.
UNA Board of Trustees need to stop playing politics and stop trying to appear to be innocent. She did not lie in her complaints and documents. What she said happened actually happened. They need to do right by Ms. Mitchell and others that have been wronged and you know there are others. By the way, I am told several Board members knew about the recordings and their content years ago. Of course, business as usual they ignored and hoped it went away or they could make it go away. Maybe the newly appointed Board members will actually do the right thing. I'll wait. In the meantime, I am still searching for the other recordings.
Come forward and make your complaints, issues and concerns public. As Coach Maynor said "It ain't 1959"! Stand up and Speak out Loud! That is the only way UNA Administration and Board of Trustees will even act like they are concerned.

Personnel Problems at UNA - Part IV
Next up a conversation with David Shields, Catherine White and Jimmy Waddell. Audio:
To give you some additional context to this conversation please read the following emails found on the UNA server. Also keep in mind. This is before President Kitts arrived at UNA and just after William Cale suddenly resigned. Dr. John Thornell was named Interim President until Kitts arrived around April 2015. It would appear by these emails and audio recordings that David Shields and Catherine White are the embarrassments.
