Murphy Duo Sinks to All New Low

The following was submitted by a local historian; tomorrow we'll give our take on this whole warped work.

The Murphy family is now questioning the legitimacy of Solder's Rest. They are also calling into question the citizenship of Alabama Governor Edward O'Neal and Judge Robert Simpson.

Does the Murphy duo really want headstones to be removed from Florence Cemetery? It sure seems that way.

According to Florence City Code Sec. 6-9. - Removal of offensive monuments, etc: If any monument, effigy or enclosure, or any structure placed in, or upon any lot in any city cemetery shall be determined to be offensive or improper, such monument or structure shall be removed by the owner thereof upon notice by the sexton.

We knew that moving the Confederate monument to Solder's Rest would be nothing but an open door to having it permanently removed. If it is deemed too offensive for the Courthouse the City Council would determine it too offensive for the cemetery, per City Code.

Now we have a City of Florence "department head" calling grave makers inside the cemetery offensive. Up until recently, City Council President Dick Jordan has shown no real interest in local history. In the past 40 years, he has shown no real interest in West Florence.

In my estimation, everything that has been happening in this city has served no purpose other than to create division and chaos. Divide and conquer!

For the Murphy family to compare Confederate Soldiers to what is happening modern day is a false equivalency. It shows how little they understand history.

The fact that it took both of them to write the published article is hilarious.

    1. Brian W. Murphy, a Florence Department Head and Adjunct at UNA, and Katie Owens-Murphy, a Professor at UNA. There is a short bio in the linked article.
