Why Did Bill Jordan End the Florence Swim Team?

We don't remember a time when Florence didn't have a swim team. It may not have had an otter mascot of a slick acronym, but it was extant and it was very competitive. Here's a mention of the team from May 7, 1961:

We know that the team goes back farther than 62 years, but sadly it's being ended by current Parks & Recreation head Bill Jordan (son of City Council President Dick Jordan). Yes, things change, but we see no reason for B. Jordan to drop the swim team. What will be next?

We're attempting to get more information, but for now here is a letter published by the current coach:

  1. Florence can afford to waste untold amounts of money on vanity projects like Dandy Andy's latest fiasco tied to the "rebranding" F! disaster of the logo but deny the area's children a program to swim. The city can build pickle ball courts and tear up a little league baseball field but deny the area's children a place to play ball. Children have no voice to protest or money to influence, just like many of the poor and elderly SO their programs can be cut in favor of "area ambiance" and so the influential "monied" citizens can play THEIR "fad" sports......Shows where ALL of the "leaders" heads are at!! All I can say myself is August 26, 2025, CANNOT get here soon enough! Those who have been pushed around and are tired of paying the highest retail sales tax in North Alabama yet seeing only the privileged few benefitting from everyone's tax dollars better wake up and vote for sensible, concerned candidates. OR, better yet, RUN AS A CANDIDATE! What happens on Pine Street affects you as much or more than what happens on Pennsylvania Ave!
