Propinquity/What is the County's Liability?

Propinquity...it's a word not often used in everyday conversation. From Wiki:

In social psychology, propinquity (/prəˈpɪŋkwᵻtiː/; from Latin propinquitas, "nearness") is one of the main factors leading to interpersonal attraction.

In short, propinquity (close proximity) is what turned a church friendship into a blazing affair between our governor and his now chief adviser. Perhaps Robert Bentley felt he couldn't just show Rebekah Mason the door when he first noticed his attraction to her, but he should have. Just FYI, that goes for any of you out there reading this who may be in a similar situation.

Sources in Montgomery are laying odds that Bentley will resign shortly. While it's no given, don't be surprised to find Kaye Ivey is your next governor.

*****

Last week we received a communication from a local corrections officer about Andrew Scott. According to our source, Scott was arrested on March 1st and March 9th in Limestone County on three misdemeanor traffic charges and was released on his signature. Our source further informed us that this makes five traffic arrests this year and one in 2015, four of them moving violations, meaning that Scott is two points short of losing his license and presumably his community corrections job.

Our main concern is that Scott, currently (and ostensibly) serving a ten year state sentence for a laundry list of property and drug crimes, could cause harm to an innocent individual--one of his January charges involved driving almost 80 mph near Clements School. If the worst should occur, would Lauderdale County Community Corrections be liable? Before you say that a county entity can't be sued, think back to the county's previous sheriff and the number of suits filed against him and his department. We understand these were settled out of court, but the taxpayer ultimately suffered.

Whether this young man's actions ever impact the taxpaying citizens of Lauderdale County of not, they are certainly draining his pocketbook. These five charges will result in over $1,000.00 in fines and court costs. That means his victims' restitution will be further delayed unless his family again steps in. It's sad this man, who during his heyday of crime was deemed a sociopath, chooses to live this way, but our sympathy is with Scott's many victims, some of whom have contacted us asking about his status. We're not holding out hope that they will ever be fully repaid.

No Wake Up Calls for These Bad Boys?

Presley
When rehab doesn't work:

Everyone in Franklin County knows Elvis Adam Presley—the perennial bad boy that is. He even once recruited an immediate family member to bring him drugs to the Franklin County Detention Center. He has more felony arrests than his namesake had Grammys. His latest was in Florence in November for shoplifting.

Next comes Jock Bo Riley. He hasn’t limited himself to just one county, but has had felony arrests in Lauderdale, Franklin, and Marion. His record goes back at least 7 years; his most recent arrest being a parole revocation. He's currently incarcerated in the Franklin County Detention Center with a release date of February 3, 2017.

Then there’s Gerald Winston Surratt Jr. He’s had arrests in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties and was on the area’s most wanted list for over a year. His criminal career has heated up in the past few months with new arrests in December and just this month for burglary and theft. Sources say he’s still a suspect in a major crime from a few years ago.

Let’s not forget J.J. Common. You have to hand it to someone with enough chutzpah to shoot a high school football player in the middle of a game. It’s too bad chutzpah doesn’t come with common sense. J.J.’s latest conviction was a few months ago for attempting to burn down the Colbert County Jail.

Scott
No “Bad Boy List” is complete without Andrew Daniel Scott. His rap sheet goes back at least six years and his AlaCourt record is four pages long. A PNS article recently revealed that Scott was AWOL for a week last year after another stint in drug rehab. The court didn’t have to issue a warrant for his capture since he already had one outstanding for failing to show up in District traffic court on a speeding charge. Yet all he received for these infractions was 90 days total in the detention center. He’s now back in community corrections, and it’s anyone’s guess what that means. Why he wasn’t charged with escape is also anyone’s guess.

What do our bad boys have in common? Utter disregard for the law, chronic drug abuse, no father in the home during many of their formative years, and almost zero chance at any decent future. Presumably all have been through drug rehab, some more than once. Maybe the most frightening thing about these habitual offenders is that our readers tell us women support them both emotionally and financially while they’re incarcerated.

Somehow we’re reminded of Slimy Bastard….

Bad Boy Updates

(3) Any person who knowingly sells, manufactures, delivers, or brings into this state, or who is knowingly in actual or constructive possession of, four grams or more of any morphine, opium, or any salt, isomer, or salt of an isomer thereof, including heroin, as described in Section 20-2-23(2) or Section 20-2-25(1)a., or four grams or more of any mixture containing any such substance, is guilty of a felony, which felony shall be known as "trafficking in illegal drugs." If the quantity involved:
a. Is four grams or more, but less than 14 grams, the person shall be sentenced to a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of three calendar years and to pay a fine of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).
- See more at: http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/alcode/13A/12/5/3/13A-12-231#sthash.ap70V1Ua.dpuf

We were unaware that 14 grams of heroin made one the North Alabama kingpin, but apparently it does.

The Alabama Code states:

Now it would seem the most pertinent question is how much was he caught with in Florence during his last arrest. More than 14 grams and it's a mandatory 10 years.

*****

Andrew Daniel Scott has been moved to Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore County. This answers at least one of the questions from readers. Hottie Scottie is still accruing good time, so he's still trouble free. Let's hope this is the turn-around for him.

*****

We're always surprised at the misinformation disseminated by local voters. First, both Florence and Lexington are in Lauderdale County. Someone who lives in Lexington does indeed live in "the county," but so does one who lives in Florence.

Would a sheriff who lives in Florence police only Florence? Unless there's a terrorist attack, we doubt he'll do any "policing" of Florence. Florence has its own police department...just as Lexington does. The difference is that Lexington and similar small towns do call on the sheriff's office for assistance from time to time. If you're convinced Rick Singleton won't assist "the county," why are you convinced Hendershot, who was not born in Lauderdale County as Rick was, would do better? Logic isn't everyone's strong point...

We'll just inject here that we've been accused of being one of Augie's ex-wives. No. Never met Augie. We're sure he's a great person, but we feel Rick Singleton will make the better sheriff.

Agee & Scott: Long-Term Guests of the State

Richard Edward Agee Jr., of Tuscumbia, was arrested in 2010 for shaking a two year old child that belonged to his then girlfriend, a young woman who obviously makes the UNA terrorist look like Einstein. Perhaps she falls into the category of having a man at any price?

If you missed it, Agee has just been convicted of First Degree Rape in Franklin County. When publishing an article about the conviction, another local site mentioned his previous conviction for Aggravated Child Abuse.

Guess what? The current girlfriend is upset that anyone would be so unfair. Let’s see…she’s dating a man who abused a two-year old physically and three years later raped a woman. Yes, we can see how mentioning anything about these crimes is so unfair.

Note to this girlfriend: Get a cat. When Agee finally gets out of prison, you may have matured enough to realize there are much worse things in life than being sans a boyfriend.

Now, from baby shaker to baby snatcher. We’ve had another person contact us regarding Andrew Daniel Scott. We recently blogged on Scott and listed his release date as December of this year. The reader corrected us and stated his end of sentence date is December 2016.

This reader, another victim of Scott, has asked us more questions than we can answer by looking at only his Department of Corrections online info. We will attempt to get some answers for Scott’s victims, but we doubt that Hottie Scottie has been in any real trouble since his incarceration as he apparently has had no correctional incentive time revoked. Maybe he had his head shaved to look a little less hot in prison?

To be continued…

Note to anyone: If anyone feels sympathy for either Agee or Scott, simply stop to think about the children and other victims involved in their ongoing sagas. If you don’t feel more sympathy for these innocents, there’s something wrong with you. Period.

Andrew Daniel Scott Finally in Prison

Some weeks ago we were contacted by a victim of Andrew Daniel Scott who had no idea where the young man was and when, if ever, he should expect to receive any restitution. We advised the victim to contact the state probation office who could inform him of any new developments in Scott’s case.

The reader took our advice and was informed that Hottie Scottie was now in prison. The victim would begin to receive restitution when Scott made work release status. We checked, and Scott is indeed in the Alabama Prison System...finally.

Scott is now housed at the co-educational rehabilitation system in Columbiana that we blogged on yesterday. It would appear that these programs last around six months or so. At the end of whatever program(s) young Mr. Scott is involved in, he will be sent to a work release program, probably in Decatur, unless some of his victims want to protest the location as just a little too close to home.

Is this a definite outcome? No. First, as previously mentioned, the program is co-educational. We have no doubt that if you asked the admins of this facility, they would promptly tell you that fraternization is strictly limited to some classes and that all rules are strictly enforced. Be that as it may, the old saw about a “will and a way” comes to mind.

If Hottie Scottie misbehaves, he will not go to work release, but leave the educational facility for a more hard-core prison. His release date is December 10, 2014. Unless he commits a crime while incarcerated, he will be back in the Shoals in time for Christmas.

Lock up your homes, your cars, and your daughters.

If any do wish to protest Andrew Daniel Scott’s possible transfer to work release or its location, you will need this info:

Another Hottie Scottie Victim

We recently received a communication from a gentleman who had read the Shoals Crime post Kinky Killen Kidnapping. He states he was a victim of Andrew Daniel Scott and had reported the theft, but has not received any restitution from the young man...and he’s looking for answers, not to mention money.

One route the victim inquired about was hiring his own attorney. Unless the amount he lost was well into the thousands, we don’t see that as being economically feasible. If he wants to be sure Scott pays as some kind of justice, then it might be morally worth it to him.

Unfortunately, it’s possible that this theft may have been admitted by Andrew Scott, but not specifically listed in any of his indictments and, therefore, not legally binding to require restitution. Since Scott was arrested again last November, anyone who has been a victim should contact the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s office for help in how to proceed now that Hottie Scottie is again active in the system and awaiting further sentencing.

If this theft was documented and mentioned in Scott’s previous plea agreement, the victim (or other victims) should contact the office of the circuit court clerk to determine if the courts are holding any funds for disbursement. There seems to be close to two dozen reported victims in the wake of Andrew Daniel Scott’s seven-year long crime spree, and we doubt all will ever be repaid.

And, yes, it’s very sad when anyone’s hard earned money is taken from them and winds up in the nose or arm of a douche bag.

Andrew Daniel Scott--Arrested Again, and Again, and Again

Andrew Daniel Scott is not Robert Downey Jr., at least yet. We do have hopes that he will at some point come to his senses and live up to his potential...but they are minuscule. We have to ask what his supporters in kidnapping a child think of him now. This is after Scott's umpteenth stint in rehab. (Yes, we're shamelessly stealing a mugshot from the QCD, but we got it that way...)

Our sources say Daddy bailed him out again. Can Daddy's money keep him out of prison this time? We doubt it, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The Waiting Game

We had been waiting to publish today for a report from the Hershel Dale Graham Felony Murder trial. As of yet we haven't received word from the contributor, so we'll offer a few updates on various topics.

1. The Brown Recluse wants her fans to know the comment concerning a regular Saturday column for the TimesDaily was an April Fool. We inferred as much since we've never seen the TotallyDecatur use a local author on a regular, or even irregular, basis. You can still read TBR on her deeply insightful blog featured on our sidebar. She's taking part in the A to Z Blogging Challenge this month.

2. Pen-N-Sword is reporting accused rapist Deion Bonton has been released from the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center on bond.

3. Home invader Blake Austin Hines remains incarcerated in that facility. No word on his still to be captured cohorts.

4. Andrew Daniel Scott also left the detention center today via judge's order. We received no more details from our source and don't know if Hottie Scottie is entering drug rehab or is being allowed home before a trial. We hope this involves a plea that will demand serious counseling for Scott.

5. A reader commented with tongue in cheek concerning the huge awards sure to come from any suits against Angel Gieske, an unlicensed counselor who seems to have taken local DHR and several others for quite an unpleasant ride. No, we're pretty sure most of the money Gieske made from this felonious project is now spent. That may make it harder to find an attorney willing to participate in any lawsuit. The main thrust of these lawsuits should be to ensure Gieske doesn't just move her con from Alabama to still another state; however, if Medicaid does follow through, Gieske will be moving...

Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle?

"Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle" seems to be a charge that's a general catch-all for various crimes (and misdemeanors?). We once thought it pertained solely to those who borrowed a car and didn't bring it back.

Many years ago, a young woman was moving. She borrowed a truck from a friend, then allowed her boyfriend to keep the truck overnight. It seems this woman had some serious problems for which she refused to get help. When her family heard of the truck situation, they promptly persuaded the neighbor to charge the woman with car theft. The charge stuck, and Lauderdale County managed to get a conviction on the theft charges. Since the woman already had a a felony conviction for drugs, she was sent South.

But how about the other way? Will the district attorney or a victim prefer lesser charges if the thief is known to the victim or even a friend? It seems so.

Steven Lee Scott (pictured left) seems to be a prime example of this phenomenon. While on drugs, he knocked down a friend, rifled through her handbag for her car keys, and managed to get as far away as Moulton with her much-needed vehicle. Yet he was charged with only Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Apparently law enforcement couldn't make the woman testify against her friend, but a lesser charge enabled her to at least get her vehicle back.

Now the most recent Lauderdale County indictments have been published and we find that Andrew Daniel Scott (pictured right) has yet another charge tacked to several theft and burglary crimes. He's also been charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Why? We're guessing, like the Village Square victim in Russellville, this was the only way a friend or family member could reclaim his transportation.

Andrew Daniel Scott--No Benefit of Doubt

Progressive Faces of a Life of Drugs and Crime

Hottie Scottie spent Christmas in jail...but don't feel too sorry for him, folks. It's not like Judge Gil Self and the citizens of Lauderdale County haven't given him more chances than George Clooney at a Sadie Hawkins Day dance.

Our sources at the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center tell us Scott came in on December 11th, presumably after failing another drug test. As of 1:00 p.m. today, he's still in custody. What does this mean for Andrew Scott? It doesn't look good for him as far as prison goes. We'll have an update on his legal status after the first of the year when the clerk's office is functioning at full force.

What about his future? At one time Scott wanted to become a Registered Nurse. Will that ever be possible? We've asked Nurse Nan who now toils at Pen-N-Sword.

"Each case is different. I had to undergo background checks at Calhoun, UAH, the Alabama Board of Nursing (license), and my place of employment. With each arrest and/or conviction Andrew gets, it makes it harder for him to pursue any career where licensing is required.

"It's really not just for nursing, but any career he may choose. Unless he works for himself or a company that's willing to look beyond his convictions, he will have a super hard time ever supporting himself in any real fashion. Most boards and companies use the five year rule, but the number of convictions Andrew gets will also be looked at. In other words, it's not just a one time lapse of judgment for him.

"Financially? There's also a waiting period for financial aid for those convicted of drug crimes. That might not apply here since Andrew's parents have means and contacts."

And what of Andrew's parents? Mr. Scott, please listen to us. You are doing Andrew no favors by not insisting he get help. Please cease your campaign to take a child away from his parents and focus your efforts on helping your son. It's not what we or anyone else think of Andrew's chances. It's what God thinks and can do for him, but you have to do your part. Please at least think about it.

Editor's Note: Our friend Nurse Nan had an interesting Christmas. We'll add our thanks to the Colbert County Commission's fight for guard rails on Hwy 43: Ben's Okay, but the Truck?

Trials & Tribulations--We Got 'Em

The trial of Brandon Shane Mundy was scheduled to begin today in Lawrence County; however, the former North Courtland police officer has asked for a delay. The Circuit Court judge's ruling on the request should be made known sometime this morning. Mundy is charged in the 2010 traffic deaths of Gary and Sandra Cox.

Today also marks the start of the Jason Dewayne Green trial for Felony Murder in Franklin County. It's expected to last the entire week, if not longer. Green's defense will maintain his fiancee' Shay Ledlow shot herself. The State maintains that the evidence doesn't back up that claim.

In Colbert County, the trial of Tanisha Tetter Welch will begin this morning at 9:00 a.m. Welch, first cousin to accused murderer Ron Wikkid Weems, is accused of harassing a friend of victim Amanda Taylor's family.

Also in Colbert County, District Attorney Bryce Graham has announced he will present the shooting of Jesse Rainey to the next grand jury. If the shooter should be indicted, authorities will then decide if he will be tried as an adult. Rainey remains in critical condition in Birmingham. Whether the shooter is indicted or not, Rainey's family could, and probably will, sue the person or persons responsible for Jesse's condition. Patients with traumatic brain injuries have a long and expensive road to recovery. Here's hoping young Jesse's path will be swift and he can return home to his family in good health.

In Lauderdale County, Andrew Daniel Scott, aka Hottie Scottie, has again been released from jail. This last ten-day stint was the result of a "failure to obey" the conditions of his bond. We'll have info on his trial or plea bargain as soon as it's available.

Andrew Daniel Scott Returned to Custody

Our source at the Florence-Lauderdale Detention Center states Andrew Daniel Scott of Killen was returned to custody yesterday. The informant didn't know if this was a new arrest or a violation of the terms of his release approximately one week ago. We'll have more information on our favorite candidate for the Eddie Haskell Lifetime Achievement Award as it becomes available.

From a Reader/Contributor:

There are several possibilities concerning this alleged rape:
1) It NEVER happened
2) It DID happen, but is being handled quietly/carefully due to possible evidence being acted up on slowly/carefully
3) It DID happen and UNA is covering it up, fearing a mass exodus of female students in the wake of a 'serial rapist on campus' announcement.

Our personal take is that something happened on campus, but it wasn't a rape. We do not believe the university would attempt to cover up something of that magnitude.

Bad Boys Revisited

Ken Risner has been indicted by a Colbert County Grand Jury for crimes involving a terrorist threat. Risner was arrested several months ago in Tuscumbia's Spring Park, forcing an evacuation.

McKenzie Corey Johnson has been arrested in Florence for failure to register as a sex offender. He's either out of prison again after a robbery conviction or never went south.

More: Why Is He Out?

Andrew Daniel Scott has been released from jail by order of Judge Gil Self. We infer Judge Self knows the current state of our prison system almost automatically ensures drug court/probation for the Killen resident and made sure Hottie Scottie served some actual time (around 60 days).

He's In the Jailhouse Now: Bail

Several readers have asked us how they can ensure those charged with crimes receive the punishment they deserve. In the judicial reality of Alabama, that's an almost impossible task. The first issue some readers have is with bail. Comments usually mention Franklin County where the accused is often stated to be held without bond.

Crimes usually come with a standard bail; in other words not much leeway is given, but in some cases the availability and amount are determined by the judge. The smaller the county and its judicial system, the slower the process may be. It's not that those who commit crimes in Franklin County aren't given the chance to bond out--they just have to wait longer to appear before a judge.

Andrew Daniel Scott July 24th Arrest Photo

Interestingly, just as we began to write this article, we received several e-mails informing us that Andrew Scott was back in jail. For this latest go-round, he is accused of three counts of theft, two counts of forgery, and one count of burglary. Scott has two standard bonds totalling 6K, but remains in the detention center--a fact we found surprising.

We contacted our source at the courthouse who told us Judge Gil Self has a hold on Hottie Scottie. One of our legal eagle friends then added that Judge Self will probably revoke Scott's previous bond if he should be bailed out on these six new charges. In other words, paying over six hundred dollars for a bail bondsman to spring the Killen resident would be for nought.

A very wise friend of the elder Mr. Scott commented: I hope Roger will wake up and see that the boy needs help, and to continually make excuses for bad behavior invites more bad behavior.

Andrew Scott's May arrests on two previous charges (theft/burglary) have not yet come to trial; therefore, he has no previous convictions (his February 2010 drug charges were adjudicated using youthful offender status). In other words, the six most recent charges will also be considered first offenses. We'll be following his day in court...one we hope mandates drug rehab.

Bailey's Advice: Throw Them Out

If you read the news from around the country, you know a 74 year-old grandmother outside Detroit has been charged with killing her 17 year-old grandson. This lady was "raising" the boy after his parents divorced and moved out of state. His friends say he was no trouble maker, but he was in an alternative school and police had been called in when he attacked his grandparents before. Why was the grandmother arrested? She shot her grandson eight times. There was a similar case in one of our neighboring counties recently, but it was the boy who killed the grandmother.

The interesting thing to me is that almost all commenters on the shooting stated the boy should have been with his parents in the first place. I agree, but many parents fall down on the job and grandparents are the only hope for them. Unless of course one shoots the other dead.

I wrote about Laquania Weems yesterday. When Ron Wikkid's youngest child (that we know about) is 17, Laquania will be 73. A reader wrote that the little girl may turn out well after all, and she may. She would have a much better chance of turning out well if Laquania would give her to the state to be adopted. After Ron and Laurel Pruett are convicted, they will have no say so in what happens to the child.

If Laquania does keep the girl and she turns out like her father? Well, for starters, catering to her every need and allowing her to live off others isn't going to solve the problem. If Laquania Weems had thrown Ron Wikkid Weems out when she first realized he was a druggie and an abuser, he just might have shaped up and Amanda Taylor might be alive today.

Should a parent defend their child? I say that depends. I just published a comment from someone who questioned why this blog did an article on Andrew Scott's latest arrest. I would think it was for those who kept pushing for Andrew to take his "biological child" away from its parents. This is something that Andrew's parents still support. Wake up, Mr. Scott. The best thing you can possibly do for this young man is to let him sink or swim on his own.

You bailed him out the day he was arrested, didn't you? Three or four days in jail might have opened Andrew's eyes. Now he can continue to feel used and abused by society. If you don't get him some help, this won't be his last arrest.

Update on Andrew Daniel Scott Arrests

Andrew Daniel Scott

Twenty-two year-old Andrew Scott, aka Hottie Scottie, was arrested in Florence on May 11th for Third Degree Theft of Property and Second Degree Burglary of a non-residence. The Killen resident previously received youthful offender status for a non-marijuana drug arrest in February 2010.

As recently as 13 months ago, Scott's father posted on his Facebook page: How do you justify taking a child from his biological father? Laws created in a corrupt legal system are second to God's law.

God's law? As far as we know God hasn't given out any updates on his plan for families. Perhaps Andrew's troubles stem partially from feeling above man's law?

The Truth About Hottie Scottie

Isn't it funny how various paths in our lives cross at unexpected times? Yesterday, Carole Coil Medley won a hard fought election against Florence Municipal Judge James E. Hall II. I personally supported Carole, but if Judge Hall had won the election, I would have still felt the Lauderdale District Judgeship was in more than capable hands.

My pressing problem in that case would have been whether to support Janice Keeton or Marshall Gardner as his replacement (I had friends lobbying on both sides). Now, I'm sure Florence City Court is safe with Judge Hall for at least two more years.

Due to the elections and the problems facing Lauderdale EMA, this blog has been lax concerning various public announcements, causing a friend to inquire why the Community Health Fair was overlooked this year. My apologies to this wonderful effort combining the forces of the Community Health Clinic and the UNA School of Nursing. While it was too late to advertise the clinic, I did ask my friend to inquire concerning the status of Andrew Daniel Scott, aka Hottie Scottie, supposedly a student at the CON.

According to two faculty members, Scott never made it to the actual College of Nursing, although he probably did take some preparatory courses. One instructor for the small college (they accept approximately 50 applicants each year), said specifically they didn't want someone with Scott's record in their college. If this information should be in error, I'm sure Mr. Roger Scott, Andrew's father, will immediately contact this blog. Judging by the above poster condemning a fine attorney/judge, Scott is still in denial concerning his son's actions.

Most of Andrew Daniel Scott's supporters on his Facebook "Cause" page appear to be relatives or young individuals who simply failed to check the facts in the case before joining this more than misguided effort. I'm personally thankful that the Shoals area has attorneys and judges (yes, even Jimmy Sandlin) who support a two parent home, a home in which parents manage to stay off drugs, stay out of jail, and know the responsibilities of parenthood involve more than simply being a sperm donor.

The caption on the poster Roger Scott created reads:
What you fight for tells everyone about your character. It certainly does; as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord.

It's Almost Over

We thoroughly agree with our friend Matt Osborne that it will be refreshing when the Alabama Primary is officially over. Of course, then begins the...sigh...runoff season. Let's see where we are with other recent issues.

Over: Sandra Killen-Burroughs is now officially the newest member of the Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Board. Look for Sandra to continue her rise up the political ladder.

Almost Over: Paige Hite McWilliams has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for her theft of Cherokee Library funds. McWilliams is seeking probation, while Special Prosecutor Doug Evans is asking for the full sentence. Apparently, Evans has no desire to allow the former library director even work release status since she has been ordered to repay the stolen funds within 30 days. We feel McWilliams has suffered enough humiliation. If the missing money is repaid promptly, surely probation would better serve both her and the public.

Who Knows When It Will Be Over: A preliminary hearing for UNA nursing student Andrew Daniel Scott of Killen was held Monday in Lauderdale County District Court. Scott, who was arrested in February on charges of possession of a controlled substance(s) non-marijuana and drug paraphernalia now faces a grand jury indictment. His appeal in the adoption of his biological son will be held next month.

Doubtful that It Will Ever Be Over: Donald Wayne Darling II has been arrested again--this time for domestic violence and assault.

Brinley Brothers' Bistro has never been afraid of controversy, having taken some recent hits concerning its Beer Pong tournaments. Now, the downtown Florence eatery has taken on one-third of Russellville's population--Hispanics.

We doubt that Brinley's is worried about any backlash from the PC crowd, but we'll take this opportunity to educate a few folks. Mexico has a Caucasian population of 15%--think Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro or singer Placido Domingo. The other 85% is an indigenous people or a mixture; many don't even speak Spanish and are technically not Hispanic. Besides, a large percentage of chicken plant workers are Guatemalan and have an inbred animosity toward Mexicans--in other words, they won't be celebrating Mexico's Independence Day.

Now, for the salient question. Did Tim James show up?

Getting VOCAL About Crime

National Crime Victims' Rights Week is April 18-24. A candlelight vigil will be held in Florence's Wilson Park on April 20th at 7:00 p.m. While VOCAL isn't perfect, it does a great work with helping the families of those who have been the victims of violent crime. Many thanks to Denny Kimbrell, current VOCAL president, for all that he does.

Ben Burt Jr. has been denied parole. He will continue serving the remaining seven years of his sentence in the death of Matthew Williams.

*****

Former Burt associate, Mark Anthony Hurley, aka the Reedtown Rapist, has been arrested again while out on bail--this time on drug charges. He was indicted by a Franklin County Grand Jury last week on the current charges of Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia. What does it take to keep this man in prison?

*****

Andrew Daniel Scott, aka Hottie Scottie, will face a preliminary hearing in Judge Carole Coil Medley's courtroom on April 30th. Scott was arrested in early February in downtown Florence and charged with the Possession of a Controlled Substance and Drug Paraphernalia.

The reward for information leading to an arrest in the brutal attack on Jake is now $125.00. Please call Capt. Ron Tyler with the Florence Police Department at 760-6576 if you have any information.

Which one is illegal: According to the state audit of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame released in January of this year, one board member was appointed illegally. Interesting, but which one...and why? Could David Johnson use this illegal action in a fight against the Board?
