Almost 200 United Methodist Congregations Leave Denomination in North Alabama

The North Alabama Conference of United Methodist Churches covers almost every area of the state north of Montgomery. On December 10th, 198 of congregations in this conference left the denomination, ostensibly to become Independent, Global, Foundry, or Free Methodists.

The main issue of concern to those which left appears to be the acceptance of same-sex marriage. Now, 440 congregations remain in the popular denomination.

What issues have divided American Methodists before? Dancing, drinking, and racial equality. What Shoals congregations will now have new names? We're not aware of any as yet, but look forward to hearing from any who have disaffiliated and wish to tell their story.

Everyone remember that line in Blazing Saddles?
