We're not too much for "politically correct" when it comes to names, so we were surprised to receive a missive that decried the name "400 Unit" as a popular band. Is it insulting?
Technically, yes. The 400 Unit was a colloquial name for a now defunct inpatient behavioral unit at ECM Hospital. In other words, it wasn't complementary to say that someone should be sectioned to the 400 Unit. Our reader wants the name changed. Good luck with that.
Our take: 99% of the people who live outside the Shoals have no idea what the name signifies. Even most who are local probably don't care.
There's also the problem of the name being owned by a private group. Unlike Deshler or Joe Wheeler, the public has no real input into what the band is named.
If we had a short-lived music venue with a name that is known to signify a woman of easy virtue, is the 400 Unit really that offensive?
