Alabama is a state where corporal punishment is legal...under certain circumstances. What kind of climate does that create in the classroom?
The parents of a child we will identify only as C.H. have come forward to relate how their male kindergarten student was slapped at least twice in a recent incident where he was accused of raucous behavior.
The teacher in question was given a class transfer and a short unpaid leave in punishment for her untoward actions. One source who has not been verified has stated the suspension was for three days.
We do not know if this educator has tenure in Franklin County Schools or not. From the facts that are known, we sincerely hope this teacher's contract is not renewed.
Should C.H.'s family now take legal action against this woman? It happened in Tennessee last fall. While we're not sure this is the best way to handle the situation, it might encourage the Franklin BOE to take these incidents more seriously.
