Sheffield City Schools has a new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Carlos Nelson is to be congratulated on his appointment to the position, as well as for his many years of service.
It is no secret that Sheffield City Schools has more than its share of problems. Its graduation rate is among the lowest in the state. Its student disciplinary issues are equally high. Its teacher and employee morale are 'in the tank', and its school board turns a deaf ear to administrators' pleas for support, especially with beligerant and unruly 'parents'.
Dr. Nelson indeed has his work cut out for him. It is my hope and prayer that God provides him with the wisdom to be the leader that the system desperately needs, and that the school board will work with him in raising Sheffield City Schools back up to where it once was; shining bright as a beacon to all others.
Dr. Nelson should be a welcomed change from Sheffield's current Superintendent, Dr. Davis, who seems to excell at kowtowing to very vocal, yet educationally disinterested 'parents', and being especially condescending when interacting with employees.
