Take the McFarland Park Master Plan Survey

Much has been said concerning the again proposed College Street bridge, but the City of Florence has another large project in the making. If you're of a certain age, you've heard it called McFarland Bottom; it's now known as McFarland Park. You don't have to be all that old to know that the area is prone to flooding.

The park is made up of 360 acres, with a large portion unused. This survey is to assist in planning for the park to be "enlarged and activated." If you're like us, you have no idea what "activated" means, but we'll hope it's a good thing.

So if you live in Florence or simply enjoy spending time in our city and park, be sure to make your ideas known:

  1. Historically, Florence, and The Shoals, appear to be afraid of 'success'. If Decatur can support a MAJOR water park, why can't we? More restaurants ON THE RIVER would also be nice. What about a riverwalk SHOPPING AREA, akin to Huntsville's 'Bridge Street'? Oh, yeah. I forgot; The Shoals' 'leaders' HAVE NO VISION.

  2. I like JH1961's ideas - Elevate the restaurants and shopping - add some Swan Boats and call it "Waterworld".

  3. What about a huge bonfire to just go ahead and BURN taxpayer money in the city of Florence????.....going into my 70th year I do not recall one living in Florence where during the rainy season this park did not flood....MAJOR flooding....it cannot be fixed unless the city of Florence is also conducting a survey on rerouting the TVA series of dams. Makes about as much sense to just burn the money!

    1. Agree. Remember when the new tourism building was constructed. No flooding they promised. I assume keeping a building dry while everything around it, including the walkway, floods does count.

  4. Flood control of U.S. rivers falls under the responsibilities of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
