Rename Deshler High School?

From a reader:

Thanks to your blog for bringing important issues to light. I hope you'll allow me to suggest a much needed improvement to the area. Let's rename Deshler High School.

Look at it this way: You have Florence High, Sheffield High, and Muscle Shoals High. Why do we have Deshler High named after an obscure CSA general?

There is a large percentage of African-Amerian students at Tuscumbia's only secondary school. Do they enjoy attending a facility names for a Confederate general?

A proposal to erect a monument to James Deshler was recently only narrowly avoided. One way to cut off any future monument plans at the pass is to rename the school now.

Tuscumbia Board of Education, are you listening?

  1. Crying out loud. I guess the last the name just makes it a racist school, holding back Americans. Cause I bet not one person in that school was born in Africa.
So therefore they are Americans and not African americans.
We need to focus on the future and not stay hung up on the past.

  2. Name hasn’t seemed to hurt them or anyone else in years past so no, don’t change them name! If you change it, you must change Trenholm back to Southside as well as RE Thompson to another name not affiliated with a person. When is it going to stop? You can’t take everything away to fit a group. Slavery was wrong and ended over 150 years ago. Changing all theses names and monuments but leaving BLM all around isn’t helping racism. Democrats and BLM are just creating a bigger divide!

  3. NO WAY! This has gotten way out of hand. Crazy that everyone wants to take every bit of history and try to erase it. These are places that we remember, mainly because they have been part of just about every southern family. Doing all of this, you might as well rename the USA to the United States of BLM. It's just ridiculous.

  4. Quit trying to get your 15 minutes of fame by controlling others. You can’t erase history and expect to learn anything from it.

  5. I would want to check the "source" of this article/opinion piece. It is probably a local republican party operative. (or Russian LOL) You see how the bait was immediately taken by those who "responded" blaming everything from gun violence to diaper rash on BLM and DEMOCRATS......Fear works in a presidential campaign.....Ask President Dukakis how "Willie Horton" is doing.....Some causes are noble....others are click bait and traps for shrewd and unscrupulous individuals to use to dupe the easily fooled.....And just look at what is currently in the White House...there are MANY easily fooled in this country.....don't fall for it again America....Alabama falls for it everytime, but this IS Alabama! Don't help them by falling for the okie doke local democrats and protesters. Pick your battles wisely.
