On February 7, 2020, Mary Magdalene Malone was found dead in her modest home on Davis Court in Tuscumbia. The mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was 83 years old.
Her death is the second unsolved murder of an octagenarian in that city. In 2012, Elbert Farley Davis Jr. had been found dead in his home after an apparent robbery gone wrong. In Ms. Malone's death, the motive was also allegedly money. A safe was found open in her home with its contents removed.
After 21 months with no notable progress in the case, Ms. Malone's family wants answers. According to family members, some Tuscumbia detectives have been helpful, while others have refused to keep the family notified of any developments...assuming there have at least been some.
Two of Mary's family were recently scheduled to meet with authorities in Tuscumbia, but upon arrival, found that there was no one present who was familiar with the case or who even knew about the meeting. Now, the Malone family is understandably upset.
No, not all murders are ultimately solved, even in the Shoals. It's up to the citizens in many cases to provide the information that brings a murderer to justice. In both the Malone and Davis cases, there are financial rewards for any information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the killers.
Reward or not, if you have any information, no matter how small, contact Tuscumbia Police at (256) 383-3121 or the Shoals Area Crimestoppers at (256) 386-8685.
