A Shoals Gasoline Mafia?

Our regular blogger J. Redmon regularly visits clients in Morgan County where gasoline prices are consistently lower than in the Shoals. Here's some of his recent reports to us:

January 26: Gas prices dropped to $1.99/gallon at numerous stations in Decatur today, down from $2.09/gallon. But in The Shoals, today; several stations RAISED prices to $2.29/gallon.

January 27: WHY is gasoline averaging $0.30/gallon HIGHER in The Shoals compared to Decatur?

February 1: Decatur prices dropped 10 cents yesterday while Shoals prices went UP 15 cents. WTH?

Our take is that one possibility is the more abundant oil companies in Morgan and Madison Counties. More outlets mean more competition. If readers have any other ideas, please contribute them!

Speaking of bloggers, a new writer is joining us:

Introducing Dr. G. Brooks

We would like to introduce Dr. G. Brooks to our readers. Dr. Brooks has lived in Chicago, IL for his whole life, practicing medicine. He has relocated to the Shoals area, settling in Florence, with his wife, Kim. Dr Brooks will be bringing his views on various topics in the Shoals area.

  1. Could it possibly have anything to do with the gas taxes that our area specifically has tacked on for regional development and other things?

  2. That doesn't explain the wide-ranging fluctuation, nor the 15-20 cent gap between the major dealers and the independents.
