The population of Florence describing themselves as African-American is 19%. Those who describe themselves as mixed race total 3%. If life were fair, we would expect at least one in five City of Florence employees to be Black. Unfortunately, we're a long way from there and not moving in the right direction.
We recently asked someone to identify roadblocks to more African-American city employees and were told it was because Dick Jordan has only white relatives. Our friend may have something there.
How many city department heads are Black? Only one - Fire chief Jeffrey Perkins. Progress? We've recently been told that Mayor Andy Betterton wants to shake things up.
The question we should be asking is just what does Handy Dandy Andy consider a move up?

Our resident 'snowflakes' will have a meltdown (pun intended) with what I say: 'Equity' doesn't work in the REAL world. What WORKS are relevant job skills and experience. Just because you think you 'deserve' something doesn't make it so.
