Demise of Local Swim Teams - Part IV Shoals Aquatic Club

It's called the Shoals Aquatic Club and is personally recommended by Bill Jordan to fill any voids left by the dissolution of the Florence Swim Team. Is there a website? Not that we can find. A reader did send us a cropped section (of a handout?) that lists monthly fees.

It would appear that a "regular" membership may be had for as little as $65.00. Our source also stated that the club is working on obtaining funding and scholarships to assist with the fees parents are expected to pay.

One reader asked us about the club's liability in case of accidents. While we haven't found the club itself registered with the Alabama Secretary of State, we have found the Turbo Corporation listed for Reese Shirey. As we understand it, Turbo is an umbrella entity that would cover the swim club.

The bottom line for us and many here in Florence is that something in existence since 1955 has now been thrown out as no longer needed by Shoals youth. How very sad.

This is Heinz. Yes, he's really named that, but you can feel free to change it if you adopt! You can visit five year-old Heinz at the Florence shelter on Roberson Road off Chisholm:

  1. Thanks for doggedly sticking with this story Shoalanda Speaks! There has not been one word published concerning the cancelation of the Florence swim team and being replaced by a "private club" by any other news source. This blog was criticized and the subject of derision from a council member, Jimmy Oliver, in his "remarks to the public" at the last council meeting. He stated that citizens would do well to "not rely on Shoalanda Speaks for their news". Well, whom are they to rely upon? Certainly not the Times Daily! To take a public program benefitting and open to all citizens and abolish it to promote a private "business" which charges membership fees by the department head of the Florence Parks and Recreation Department is certainly unethical and possibly corrupt. Are there kickbacks from these "fees" to anyone in the city of Florence? If an ethics investigation is conducted, Bill Jordan should at the least be suspended! The nepotism issue of his hire in the first place aside, this is an issue that can result in criminal charges if it is found that Bill Jordan is receiving "kickbacks" from the fees collected for the "swim club". Something should be done!! Maybe, THIS will get him fired! KEEP DIGGING SHOALANDA! Those of us who would like to see honesty restored to Florence City government vow to help in any way we can. THANK YOU!!
