For several months, a bonded pair of female dogs had been sheltering near the Rogersville McDonald's. Rescuers from Florence had been attempting to catch these dogs, but to no avail. The pair, possibly sisters, were well fed by several individuals, but needed much more. At least one of the female dogs had given birth to a large litter.
Just as things were looking good for the rescuers, Rogersville Police stepped in. Randall McCrary (he recently ran for sheriff) managed to confiscate the young puppies and planned to then shoot the large female dogs.
Finally, the Florence group managed to capture the two dogs and then demanded that McCrary return the pups. At this time, the two adult dogs are safe at the Florence shelter and waiting for a foster home. Only three of the puppies have been returned, and shelter staff believe there may be as many as five more out there.
Why would Rogersville want to shoot the dogs? One person involved in the rescue said: "They're just plain evil."
