Personnel Problems at UNA - Part V




The fifth and final installment of Concerned Citizen's expose' on discrimination and personnel hijinks at UNA:

Again, I am going to ask. Is UNA Board of Trustees okay with this type of behavior from their top-ranking positions on campus. As I said earlier Alabama A&M Coach Maynor’s accusations right now are hear say. But these recordings are not. Their tone and context are not. Who is involved in these recordings are the decision/policy makers and enforcers of these decisions/policies for the University of North Alabama and that should set off alarms for everyone. Now what UNA will quickly say is David Shields and Clinton Carter are no longer at the University. And yes, that is true but neither was disciplined and/or terminated. There is even a Flor-Ala article where Vice President Ross Alexander praises David Shields for being such a great person. Them leaving does not solve the issues. Do not fall for that.


If you made phone calls concerning the Alabama A&M press conference you should be organizing protests over this audio recordings. Maybe I am the only one that has a HUGE problem with the context and tone of this recordings. I certainly pray I am NOT!

Notice this was not just one incident where someone could downplay and say this was random and not the norm. These are stretched out over years. I am told there are recordings dated in 2017. Yes, there are more from other VPs. I haven’t been given those yet but I will continue to ask.

Oh, I almost forgot. Here is the video mentioned in one of the above emails of Kevin Jacques’ staff removing student belongings out of two different residence halls and placing them in a car. According to the reports made by students the dollar amount of items taken amounted to felony theft and nothing was ever done. No investigation - no sanctions - no apologies to the students - nothing. But Ms. Mitchell was degraded - demeaned - embarrassed - salary reduced. When Ms. Mitchell asked the consultant why he was brought in he did not mention this theft or anything Kevin Jacques had done wrong. Only what Ms. Mitchell supposedly had done wrong. Happy watching, It’s good stuff.

I will end with this. I remember when Mr. Michael Eric Dyson came to UNA in February 2018. During his talk he said, I am paraphrasing, a black woman could have an incident recorded and they will still say it did not happen, it was not me. This is truly the case here. UNA responded to Ms. Mitchell’s lawsuit in a 2017 article in Times Daily by saying:

University spokesman Bryan Rachal said in an emailed statement the "university enforces policies and procedures to prevent illegal workplace discrimination. All decisions concerning Ms. Mitchell's employment have been based upon legitimate non-discriminatory factors. We regret she perceives otherwise and will not further comment at this time."


While I am shocked and glad that Times Daily actually did an article, I know for a fact they had copies of these audio recordings and failed to mention any of them. Knowledge of these recordings would have revealed that UNA must be okay with their employees spoken to and treated like this because according to their statement everything concerning Ms. Mitchell was done right. And they regret she does not feel that way. WOW

I said earlier take race out of this because when some people hear racism a wall goes up and they get a glazed look in their eyes. I wanted you read and listen to the recordings with an open mind so you could place yourself in the employee’s shoes. However, I believe that if Ms. Mitchell were white she would not have endured all that she was forced to endure. The common denominator in all of these recordings is Ms. Mitchell’s (a black female) presence and those who reported directly to her (Jimmy Waddell was hired by and reported to Ms. Mitchell). Ms. Mitchell made the mistake of standing up for herself and saying out loud enough is enough. When her white counterparts were caught lying and breaking the law NOTHING happened to them. That’s racial discrimination folks. That’s retaliation. That’s creating a hostile work environment. UNA does NOT really want to be diverse/equitable and embrace diversity/equality they just want to look like they are. All about perception and PRing.

UNA Board of Trustees need to stop playing politics and stop trying to appear to be innocent. She did not lie in her complaints and documents. What she said happened actually happened. They need to do right by Ms. Mitchell and others that have been wronged and you know there are others. By the way, I am told several Board members knew about the recordings and their content years ago. Of course, business as usual they ignored and hoped it went away or they could make it go away. Maybe the newly appointed Board members will actually do the right thing. I'll wait. In the meantime, I am still searching for the other recordings.

Come forward and make your complaints, issues and concerns public. As Coach Maynor said "It ain't 1959"! Stand up and Speak out Loud! That is the only way UNA Administration and Board of Trustees will even act like they are concerned.


This has been a very compelling series. We hope that everyone hung in there and digested it in its entirety. Hopefully in the near future CC101 has quite a revelation for our readers.
