Last November, 57% of the voters said yes to a "pro-life amendment." Of course, the amendment contained the obligatory wording about not defending the legislation with our tax dollars, but that's just not how it works. If our legislature passes a total ban on induced abortions, our tax dollars will be paying not only attorneys to represent the state in lawsuits, but also in damages/court fees. It hasn't been that long since Alabama was forced to pay Planned Parenthood and ACLU 1.7 million dollars. Is this what you want?
Perhaps the most troubling part of Terri Collins' bill is that abortions in the case of rape and incest are not excluded from the ban. Collins herself has said she is introducing the bill to keep Alabama at the front of the pack in anti-abortion law. Nice to know we'll be first in something.
Why not logically spend the money on sex education? That would reduce the number of induced abortions in this state by at least 80%. Oh, wait, that word "logically" does explain why our legislature may just pass this bill. No, no one ever said our elected officials are known for their logic.
