What Are ADPH Health Ratings Worth?

We once knew a local restaurant owner who was extremely upset with the 98 rating for his establishment. He always received 100, but an employee had brought outdated milk for her lunch, leaving it in the kitchen fridge on the day of the impromptu inspection.

Then we have the fast food eatery recently reviewed by our Cherry Pitts which had an 89 total score...and didn't seem too terribly upset by the handwriting on the wall.

In Alabama, anything below a 60 means an automatic shutdown for the restaurant. Fair enough? We would think so, since the restaurant can immediately start to rectify the situation and call the inspector back in.

That happened in Mobile this past week at an eatery called Spot of Tea. Managers were dumbfounded, they said, when the restaurant failed not one, not two, but three inspections. Remember, the managers knew exactly what was wrong after the first inspection.

Now the tea room's management is accusing the ADPH inspectors of shaking the owners down for money. This is a pretty startling accusation. If true, would it make the whole system corrupt statewide? We have never before heard one such complaint locally. If you know of such a case, please contact us.

Our take is that this is some disagreement left over from COVID. No matter, we're sure our state legislature will be quick to use it for political gain.
