The Singing River Blowhard Comes Closer to Completion

Sheffield has not Presley. Muscle Shoals has not Hood. Florence will have not...who?

Over four years ago, the City of Florence paid $35,000.00 to Craig Wedderspoon for the above aluminum sculpture. At that time, called Phase I, it was to have been completed by the city's bicentennial in 2018. Now Florence is entering into Phase II with a payment of $30,000.00 to Wedderspoon and those assisting with the project at the University of Alabama.

Similarly, Tuscumbia is behind schedule with its Native American sculpture which depicts, we suppose, not Sacheen Littlefeather. Then nine more statues are to be erected around the Shoals not to depict various individuals.

We have to ask what happens in Tuscumbia when indigenous activists decide the statue of an Indian playing a primitive instrument is anathema to their culture? Let's just all hope the price of aluminum goes up.

  1. I looked out back and saw by the pool an empty beer can. My wife went to pick it up to throw away, and i shouted, "leave that alone it is art".
