Most young men (or women) don't join the military to become heroes - they simply wish to make a better life for themselves while serving their country. Most who do become heroes in combat do so simply because they rose to the challenge that was placed before them with no rhyme or reason.
Still others run from danger. And still others make up elaborate claims of heroism that never happened. Such a person is William Travis Tucker who is accused of lying and cheating his way through life. If you've only read of his Colbert County arrest, you're behind the times. Two days after he posted bond in Colbert, he was charged in Lauderdale with similar crimes.
It almost seems as if Tucker couldn't help himself. A Silver Star became a Purple Heart. Then a prisoner of war status was added. Finally, Tucker claimed he had been raped three times while in captivity, an imprisonment he somehow miraculously escaped. The claims must have proved very useful as he collected money for charity which he reportedly kept for himself.
Now Tucker may face federal charges. Some hero? Perhaps the saddest part is that Tucker isn't even the person about whom we initially wrote. Just how many are out there scamming the public?
Makes those of us who have actually served look bad. It is sad people have to lie about military service in order to feel good about themselves. Sack up and do what we did and sign up and do your time.
