Many have chastised the Muscle Shoals School System, the Muscle Shoals Police, and our blog for accusing Jeffrey Carson Nash of sending a terrorist threat. These people, many of whom used some very vulgar language in their comments on our FB page, felt the accusations against this young man were groundless and ill-thought out. Were they?
First, let's look at the meme in question. It was a meme that can be easily found on the Internet, but which had been altered to depict Muscle Shoals teachers as the shooters. So we may infer that whoever altered the meme was very familiar with the school.
Second, the altered meme was sent via AirDrop. This is a program found only on Apple products, specifically in this case, an iPhone.
Third, and here's the telling part, AirDrop can be modified to obscure the sender. According to Apple:
Step 1: Launch the Settings app on your device and navigate to General > About. Step 2: As pictured below, the Name section at the very top should display the current name of your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Tap it to set a custom name for your device. Step 3: Use the on-screen keyboard to give the device a new name.
So at the very least, even if Carson Nash didn't alter the meme, he altered his iPhone settings to indicate it was a teacher who had sent the meme to the recipients he chose. Crafty, huh?
Not only that, if IT specialists could determine who sent the informant the meme...and that was Nash, the same IT specialists should have been able to determine who, if anyone, sent Nash the altered meme. Since no one else was arrested, it's a pretty safe bet that Nash altered the meme on his home computer and then sent it to his iPhone.
No one has said that Nash would have actually shot up Muscle Shoals High School. What he was arrested for was disseminating a terrorist threat. He may be the nicest boy in his homeroom, or even the whole school, but he was incredibly stupid when he decided to pull this stunt.
99% of the students came to class that morning with the intention of learning something. That didn't happen while they were in lockdown due to Carson Nash. Probably a great many of them were too shook up the entire day to concentrate on academics. That was the fault of Carson Nash, and our sympathies will never be with someone of that ilk.
We had three commenters on our Carson Nash blog use language that could have gotten them arrested in Myrtle Beach. We banned all three; that's our prerogative. Our rules are plainly stated, and still many fail to heed them.
Anyone think we should start a rogues' gallery with their names and photos?
