How difficult is it to secure a handgun, a weapon that fits in a backpack/rucksack? Apparently some parents/guardians don't know how.
Today a child, presumably not over the age of 12, had possession of a handgun. He then took the weapon to class at Cherokee Elementary. So far news reports haven't said how the child was discovered to be in possession of the gun, but it's a good guess he showed it to someone whose parents had enough common sense to have taught him right from wrong.
No doubt the offending parent(s) will bring out a litany of excuses for their child. Our prediction, it being Colbert County, is that DHR will return this child to his parents. Considering what we've heard concerning juvenile detention homes, neither home nor group home will be the answer.
If you're a Cherokee parent, be sure to say a prayer of thanks tonight. Your children may have been upset, but they're alive and that's the most important thing.
Have weekend plans? Make sure those plans include a sit-down talk with your child about school safety and what to do if the sound of gunfire does ring out in their hallowed halls of academe.
We live in a sad world.
