Whose $7K Wall?

Below is the estimate to paint a relatively short wall located in downtown Florence on property belonging to Southern Pipe:

Oddly enough, the description of the wall states it's across the street from Singin' River Brewing Company. Did that nearness have anything to do with the city's desire to upgrade the area's visual appeal? We have to ask if there were complaints from the general public about the graffiti covered wall and, if so, who made them?

In case you're wondering about a CMU wall, it stands for "concrete masonry unit." Makes it sound much more expensive than plain ol' "concrete block," doesn't it?

The wall is to be painted on both sides. We wouldn't want the much overlooked pipe community to feel left out, would we?

The first coat is to be Sherwin-Williams Loxon Primer/Filler. The second coat is to be Loxon XP Finisher. Both products are sold locally at a retail price of under $200.00 for a five gallon can. If any of our readers have a better idea of wholesale pricing, we're happy to update this.

Total cost of the project is not to exceed $7,000.00 unless there are unforeseen problems. Now we have to ask, how many of us think that we're in the wrong line of business?

Steve Marshall Campaigns Against Correctional Incentive Time

Current Alabama attorney general Steve Marshall wants the public to know that he's against a "broken" policy in this state. CIT is actually a law and it was 40 years old in 2020. Is this the best campaign issue Marshall can come up with?

No matter what one thinks of Correctional Incentive Time, these policies shouldn't be news to Marshall after four decades. Nor should these programs be news to any crime victims if local district attorneys are doing their job.

Marshall recently latched onto this almost dog whistle when the family of a sexual assault victim reported to the press that the rapist was being released "early." If any victim wants to know the scheduled released date of any Alabama prisoner, it's online and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Here's a screen shot of the rapist's DOC page:

But Steve Marshall thinks this is a pressing problem that needs to be corrected? Why doesn't someone ask him why he hasn't already mentioned this pressing problem during the past 52 months he's been in office?

Gerald Winston Surratt Jr. Parole Hearing

If you read the list of local parole hearings in today's TimesDaily, you didn't see the name Gerald Winston Surratt Jr. Was this an oversight? Has Surratt committed a serious new infraction that struck him off the list? Or does the Lauderdale County maintenance man have the local clout that he claims?

Gerald Surratt

According to the parole board's website, Surratt's parole hearing is still scheduled for Thursday. If you wish to have input into his case, there's still time to contact the board members using the information in the above article.

Remember, should Surratt make parole, he will be returning to the Shoals. It's not a comforting thought.

House of Cards - Florence Tourism Style

House of Cards or Sinking Ship?

The definition of a “House of Cards” is a structure built out of playing cards precariously balanced together. Or an insubstantial or insecure situation or plan.

This seems to be a very fitting definition of what the once thriving and growing Florence/Lauderdale Tourism Office has become. In just a few months the staff has gone from five full-time and two part-time employees to now a meager two full-time, one part-time, a contract social media person and contract sports marketing person. No one seems to know where the full-time accountant has gone. Word on the street is that he is away on a secret mission for the foreseeable future.

It appears that Robby Baby can add “Master Juggler” to his resume, right after the “Dreaming of becoming a world-famous musician in Nashville” line. He has been answering the phones, directly answering messages from the tourism Facebook page, has actually been seen out in the community and has been MIA from the YMCA during usually lengthy lunch breaks. This must mean he is having to work to earn his $118,500 salary.

Honestly, we can find no other tourism organization, around the state or region, or with a similar budget, with so few employees. We can only assume that if a President/CEO chooses to operate with a small staff, it is out of necessity to save money. Tourism should be booming and revenues increasing, however, there were the last five years of tourism leaders not being fiscally responsible. It will take many more years to be successful and financially sound again. A large outstanding line of credit, no reserves, begging numerous agencies and government officials for funds to pay for outlandish marketing ideas should be glaring red flags that something is wrong.

What does all this really mean to Florence, Lauderdale County and the hospitality industry? They are not being properly marketed and promoted. The revenues are coming in, but not being spent effectively. The perfect example, even though it is a sore subject, is that an organization this size should be taking a leadership role in the new Ag Center. Like it or not, it can and needs to be successful. If you have a Sports Marketing person on contract to only service the events as they take place, how can you ensure the destination is being marketed and venues booked for sporting events two to five years down the road? Also, if there is no one making the sales calls or attending trade shows, how much future business is the area losing to other cities?

We have a few scenarios that could potentially play out over the summer:

1. Rob writes a top song and moves on to live his dream as a musician from The Shoals. Not going to happen. Ever.

2. Rob convinces some other clueless board he’s the greatest thing in tourism, is hired and moves on to decimate another destinations budget.

3. Remember that loophole in the tourism legislation that basically says if the board becomes insolvent, the board could vote to dissolve and the City would then own all of the assets? In other words, the City would absorb tourism and the visitor center into another department, leaving Rob out of a contract.

Number 3 seems more realistic every day. It appears that under the current leadership, or lack thereof, tourism is a house of cards that is about to come tumbling down. Or maybe Robby Baby is the last band member still playing as the Titanic sinks.

Teach the New Guy at the Sal How to Spell

Most who keep up with the news know that Florence has at least one controversial employee. Over and over, we hear: He's not from here. That's unfair criticism when there are real problems with the employee to critique, but nevertheless many feel that way.

We have another new resident in the form of a Salvationist Church leader. No, he won't be here long, but if he wants to fit in, he really should learn how to spell.

Minnehaha

Note: There's no "i" in Minnehaha, even though the semi-literate often include one.

It could be worse. What if the church building was located on Gunwaleford Road at Shoal Creek?

You're Not Welcome Here...

You can't come in here if...

* You're not wearing shoes.

* You're not wearing a shirt.

* You're not wearing a mask.

* You're wearing a bathing suit.

* You're wearing a shirt that says "F**k the Police," etc.

* You're smoking.

* You're paying with cash that's been stored in your underwear.

Yet, you can't be barred from entry because you're not vaccinated against various diseases.

Do the above rules make any sense to you? We're not sure all are legal, but we have seen them posted in various mini-marts and even big box stores.

Now that our legislature has banned "vaccine passports," will other restrictions be next? What's next is more likely to be lawsuits that our state will have to defend with our tax dollars.

We'll add a thought from political pundit Kyle Whitmire. Our wonderful new law specifies mass bans on proof of vaccinations not required before 2020. So what happens if we suddenly discover the Ruskies are busy manufacturing new crops of smallpox virus from stolen government samples?

It will probably be okay; we can just deny that smallpox exists and it will mysteriously go away.

New Charges in Sheffield Attack

Over the years, we've blogged on former Sheffield City Council candidate Sebastian Blu DeVaughn. Last August, Ms. DeVaughn was attacked by two Sheffield residents, Major Julius Rice and Ashli Brianne Perry. Authorities arrested Rice a short time after the vicious beating (it was recorded on video for Facebook), but did not initially charge the 24 year-old Perry.

DeVaughn After Attack

Now a Colbert County grand jury has indicted Rice on First Degree Assault (upgraded charges) and Perry on charges of assisting her boyfriend. While Rice has been in jail since March 8th, Perry remains free.

There is currently a warrant for Ashli Brianne Perry's arrest. According to her online bio, Perry is originally from Gadsden. She is also pregnant and unemployed.

If you are assisting Perry in hiding from law enforcement, you can be charged with obstructing justice. Do the right thing and report what you know to the Colbert County Sheriff's Office at 256-383-0741.
