Saluting Nick Saban!

Most of our writers here are Auburn fans, but we want to salute Nick Saban for a recent comment he made concerning alcohol. Coach Saban doesn't drink, thinks it's a bad example, and believes he's healthier for not consuming alcoholic beverages.

The writer of the article stated that since Coach Saban didn't look anywhere near 72, there might be something to his ethic. We totally agree.

If you follow local mugshots, you can probably pick out the alcoholics. We won't mention anyone locally, but here are three alcohol offenders: 58, 69, and 72:

We're reminded of a friend who wouldn't give up smoking to avoid lung cancer, but she would to avoid wrinkles. Go figure...

Flying Pigs and Nick Saban

Even Auburn fans (and our one Ohio State blogger) can give praise to Nick Saban when due. His response to the corona virus has been an inspiration. Here's an excellent article from APR that says it much better than we can:

Save Us, Nick Saban

While we're logically aware that God doesn't take sides in SEC football, we did have to speculate that He had good reason to be on UA's side in the Iron Bowl.

Before you get too excited about the new year, remember 2022 brings a state-wide election and the campaigns that go with it. Obviously in Alabama, the senate race is the one to watch, but this time there's a local element.

Two Shoals area men are running for the position of state auditor - Andrew Sorrell and Brent Woodall. We've known Andrew for some time and always appreciated his help with animal welfare issues. This week we ran into Brent while running errands and had a chance to speak with him briefly.

We were delighted to find Brent to be a sage and down to earth person who genuinely cares about the state. As of now, Andrew and Brent lead in most polls. It's going to be a very interesting election.

Nick Saban Speaks...Who's Listening?

If you didn't believe the gubnah, will you believe Nick Satan, uh, Saban? The U of A football coach has stated the Confederate battle flag must go. He probably has more influence than the dermatologist from Tuscaloosa.

We imagine many are torn over this issue, even more so now, which is sad. Didn't they ever think about the imagery before Coach Saban brought the matter to the attention of his adoring public this week? Maybe not...

From Rebels to Nazis...that's grammar Nazis. We see that Darren Rhodes has begun to advertise his new loft living spaces in the old McCorkle's building. Note the apostrophe, Mr. Rhodes. It's your friend.

We look forward to whatever may be locating on the ground level. How about a dedicated area for pop-up shops?

What It Was, Was Football

What's dearer to the heart of the average Alabamian than his coon dog? Why, Alabama football of course--that is unless he's an Auburn fan, but that's a story for another day. Those who can neither define nor pronounce the word proration can recite Coach Nick Saban's salary history without so much as a stutter. Perhaps they can't comprehend the enormity of it, but they will quickly tell you since the taxpayers don't fund Alabama football, it's none of their business to start with.

So, just how much does Nick Saban make? Perhaps the easiest way to comprehend the magnitude of his salary is to compare it to that of others. Currently the University of North Alabama, an institution reportedly eager to ascend to Division I athletics, offers head coach Terry Bowden a base salary of $100,000.00 per year, well over that of the average citizen in this Heart of Dixie. Sounds good, but wait, let's look at the above chart and compare it to Nick Saban's.

What does this say about the mentality of most Alabamians? If Johnny can't read, or doesn't have a book to read, does it really matter as long as he can catch a spiral pass? Perhaps we should look on the bright side; at least Nick Saban can afford to buy us all another Big Orange.
