One of the best local Facebook pages is City of Florence, Alabama Employees & Retirees. Not all who read and contribute to the this site are actually associated with the City, but most are...and it's an eye-opener.
The new city hall has recently been a frequent topic of discussion. Is there mold? Has it been eradicated? Were City leaders misquoted in the news? No matter where one stands on these issues, it's been eye-opening to read some comments from employees who work in the municipal building.
Some say they don't work for the taxpayers, but the City. Say what? The most interesting comment for us has been the following:
Working with the public is never easy. That would be nowhere more apparent than with a town government office where most who visit are already extremely ticked. Employees deserve hazardous duty pay. That being said, it's never a good idea for an employee to use vulgarities about the public, especially on a public venue. As Councilman Jimmy Oliver once said to a crude Brian Murphy - Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
